Can I have regular coffee?

Recommended Posts

I'm 12 days post-op today. I have been getting my fluids in without a problem for about a week now. Can I have regular coffee if I make sure to hydrate extra today? Or will the caffeine make me sick more than just by dehydrating?

My nutritionist's paperwork says "coffee" on day 3, but it doesn't specify Decaf even though I'm kind of assuming that's what he meant.

My post-op diet instructions said coffee day 3 as well. It noted "decaf preferred" but that was not an absolute.

I will say that I had a half a cup of coffee 1 week ago (that was 2 weeks post op) and I experienced terrible diarrhea. The coffee had half and half and was sweetened with artificial sweetener. I cannot say for sure that the coffee caused it, but I have decided to wait a few weeks before I try again!

I drink a cup or 2 a day. No problems. Double check with your NUT to be on the safe side.

I will check with him on Monday, but I'm going out for coffee this morning! I think I will stick with Decaf just to be on the safe side until I ask. Thanks guys!! :)

I was allowed coffee immediately. It really just depends on your medical team. Sticking to Decaf sounds wise for now, good thinking!

I had coffee the day I got home. I only drink 1 cup a day anyway so I have no problems with it

My rules are no caffeine ever again. That being said, I have had 3 cups of coffee and 4 Starbucks Protein drinks (TERRIBLE CHOICE) in 4.5 months.

Prior to surgery, I had an extreme caffeine addiction (that was even worse when I was in college and grad school). Over time, I realized that while I had developed this addiction, my need for caffeine was commensurate with how much I was overeating. I found that a few sips of coffee satisfied me after a small meal, whereas a Venti would hardly be enough after a larger one.

Now that my caloric intake has been slashed big time, I find that I do not even have the desire for the coffee I buy. I have been getting tiny little cups (i.e., the Dunkin small, the Starbucks short, etc...), and barely even denting them. So while I may still have a desire for caffeine in my head, and probably the need for a couple sips right when I wake up, I feel like the surgery has completely knocked my life's second great love affair with an ingestible, and is still working on putting the other one (food) to sleep.

I agree with the other posters. It is a clear liquid, so it is one of the first things you can have, and as long as you are getting you 64 fl oz of Water, go for it depending on your need.

The problem with coffee is the caffeine. Caffeine is absorbed into the body with the same receptors as Vitamin D. If caffeine is present, you cannot absorb the Vitamin D. On top of that, it also leeches Vitamins out of the body. I have at least a cup of coffee a day, sometimes two. But I also have mega dose prescription of Vitamin D that I take mid day.

As always, talk to your surgeon about these things. My nutritionist is worthless for the most part as I always have more information going in to my appointments than she has prepared. Her appointments feel more like scheduled product sales pitches than anything else.

I have not had coffee since my surgery July 22...and I do not miss it.

Thank you guys for the input! I see my nutritionist and surgeon tomorrow, so I'll ask them and let them make the final call. I'm still in college though and have a lot of late nights, so here's hoping they say yes!! :)

I have 1-2 a day with my Protein Shake and a dash of Torani sugar free caramel syrup! Tastes delicious and I get 30gms Protein with it. My NUT said this was ok as long as I drank enough Water a day, usually not a problem for me!

I drink one or two cups of coffee per day (work days mostly) and it is fine for me. I've 40 days out from WLS with Sleeve.

I used to LOVE my morning cup of coffee with splenda and 1/2 & 1/2 but once I started the pre op diet, I switched to Decaf hot tea and have stuck with it ever since. Coffee just doesn't seem to appealing to me right now at 14 days post op. Maybe it will again some day ...

I've been drinking coffee since week 2. Just like 1/2 cup for the first month. Now I drink it regularly but don't count it as a liquid for your Water goal!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
