How much should I be eating?

Recommended Posts

Okay so I'm about 10 days post-op, and I'm on the full liquid diet. I'm just wondering how much "food" should I consume? So for example if I'm "eating" chicken broth, should it be 1/2 cup? 1/4 cup? Idk the only meal I had at the hospital (once) was 1/2 cup chicken broth and 1/4 cup of apple juice, so I'm not sure what I should be having in general!

Most plans say you can have as much liquid as you can comfortably tolerate. Be careful and don't overload on high sugar/high carb items like fruit juice or whole milk, or high calorie items like "meal replacement" type Protein Shakes.< /p>

Did your team not give you any guidance on what you are supposed to be drinking or the amounts? I had a big binder of info with permitted (and forbidden) liquids, daily targets for calories, carbs, fat, and Protein -- do you have anything like that?

I've been told that at the liquid/pureed stage you needn't worry about how much you should be eating. Only when you move on to your everyday diet eventually do you need to consider your portions. Right now, you're still healing, it's likely you won't get in a lot of calories so every little helps, if you can stomach the broth and don't feel tired of eating/feel full, just go for it.

Hey, thank you for answering! They gave me a certain list of what I should be eating, it's pretty short maybe like 10 foods or something?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
