How long was hospital stay?

Recommended Posts

I'm from Australia so things may be different here but I'm booked for a 5 day stay!

.

I'm from Australia too, but my surgeon has told me it'll be 1-2 nights depending on how I recover.

I may have to double check mine then but I was sure that's what he said. I'll call tomorrow and let you know what he says ????

My surgeon requires 2 nights for sleeve and bypass and 1 night for lap band.

Thanks everyone! I plan on at least two nights, especially being a type-1 diabetic, making sure blood glucose levels are stable before sending me off. I have a fantastic surgical team that I rely on 24/7, but the hospital is an hour away so I want to be sure things are all good before leaving...

I was originally told it would be a one night stay but my potassium level got very low and they kept me another night with a potassium drip in the IV.

Mine was outpatient: I was moved to the recovery room at 10:00 and was discharged at 2:30 that same afternoon. Granted, I'm young with no comorbidities and my surgery went flawlessly. But my surgeon does most of his cases as outpatients.

I stayed two days and two nights. My insurance approved eight days, but I did not need it.

Planned on one night, ended up staying two nights. On day two, got off the IV meds, but started having nausea with Water when I was taking pills (didn't throw up but was spitting in a bucket). The surgeon didn't want me to throw up at home so I agreed to another night. We did stop the Water and stuck with watered-down juice, tea and broth and I was fine.

I was admitted at noon, checked out 4:30pm the next day.

My surgeon requires a 2 night stay, and I needed both of them. Couldn't get up and around right after surgery as others did due to pain and nausea and weakness, so it took me a little longer to get feeling better. Then I spent 2 more nights in a special recovery floor in a hotel, where I did need the staff nurse a couple of times. So, it really looks like it depends on you, your surgeon, and where you get it done.

Sleeved Thursday ~10:30 am. Spent Friday absolutely miserable and unable to wake up even to go to the bathroom or start sipping my Water. Woke up sometime in the middle of the night Saturday completely different, and by noon I was home. The surgeon's requirements were two days for sleeve, and that turned out perfectly.

On Friday, I really didn't think there was even a remote chance that I would be able to stay the minimum. So it does get better pretty rapidly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
