6 months out and still feeling like crap n

Recommended Posts

It has been a long 6 months. I have had many issues that required additional surgery including having my gallbladder removed. I continue to have stomach pain and discomfort after I eat. I am battling constant dehydration due to constant diarrhea. I have been hospitalized once to get IV fluids.

Now I am told that I might be creating too much bile now that my gallbladder (and it's ability to regulate it) is gone. Not sure how to correct this issue.

I have also stalled for 2 months. I am looking for a dietician that specializes in bariatrics and those who have had a RNY. What I have received from my hospital team is basically copied papers. I want a real shopping list and plan for weekly meals.

Very frustrated. Just want to get back to "normal" and back up on my feet again.

Sorry to hear your having a hard time. I had my gallbladder removed in 2012 and gastric bypass November 2014. I have occasional pain after eating and when that happens I have a medicine that coats and soothes my stomach from my surgeon. I plateaued for a month at 6 months and then got it going again with the 5:2 diet. Hope the pain gets better and the stall ends. Don't get too discouraged, you are very attractive and made an excellent decision to have the surgery ????

I am not sure what is causing your constant diarrhea. This doesn't sound normal. I found that eating bananas helped to control diarrhea.

Bile helps to dissolve fatty foods. So without a gallbladder (which stores bile) if you eat fatty foods it will cause a stomach ache and you will need to make runs to the bathroom. So eating lean meat, fat free foods, low fat milk is important for you. Stay off fried foods. Eat small frequent meals. Probably also do not eat a large meal before bedtime.

I'm sorry you have had a difficult course since your RNY. I too have had some bumps in the road but they seem like nothing compared to what you describe. I just want to say it's early yet and to be as positive as you can. I'm not sure if you have a Gastroenterologist but I would suggest finding a good one for recommendations. Regarding the stall, I'm thinking that if you could see the weight loss you would think this situation would be more tolerable. Stalls happen regardless and for various reasons. I doubt you are done losing weight at only 6 months out. Hopefully you will be able to track the foods that do not bother your intestinal system as much. If they have you on medication to help suppress the bile hopefully those will be effective. I hope things turn around for you soon. Just sending support your way.

A large number of people who had gallbladder removal develop a syndrome called bile salts diarrhea. I suffered from this for 31 years before I found out that there is a powder that really really helps. It is called cholestyramine. Mix the packet of powder with Water or fruit juice and drink it twice a day My diarrhea has gone away. Please please do research on this and see if it will help you.

I had RNY on August 3 and when I left the hospital I was told not to take the cholestyramine anymore. I haven't taken it since and I have not had my diarrhea so I don't know what to think about that.

Good luck to you .

The 5:2 diet is 5 days a week a normal low cal restricted diet and two days a week, you have higher calories. I was very skeptical of it but I've done it 3 times to break a stall and it worked each time.. Google it for the details

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
