Hi Everyone.

I am counting down the "medically supervised diet" for my insurance co.& have been following along here for a few weeks. I have yo-yo dieted for 18years. I have lost up to 50 pounds many times by starving but as soon as the hunger was too much I would gain it all back (usually within 6-8mths) and feel like a failure. I workout 45-60 minutes 3-5times per week but this time I am hoping the lap band will keep me from being able to gain it back. My food problem is just way too much food ie.2nd & 3rd helpings. I am concerned about some posts I see where people can't eat chicken & salad or asparagus/broccoli. Those are my fav foods(along with too much other stuff obviously) I'm wondering how hard it is to eat healthy when you are limited to certain foods.(seems Fiber & lean meat is problems for alot of people) Either way at this point I am willing to eat Soup for the rest of my life if I can keep this weight off & not feel I'm starving to death. Also I have been trying to find info on longterm success & wonder if more problems come up the longer you have the band such as erosion, slippage etc. Do the people with problems feel it has been worth it? Healthwise I have boarder hypertension & back problems. Alot of my weight is in my midsection. Also diabetes runs in the family. I am worried about causing myself more sickness by getting the band(with erosion, vomiting, reflux) and all these things I see posted here. I want this badly but I am also very cautious. I feel it's too good to be true that something might actually work & help me to solve my lifelong weight problem. Any input would be appreciated.

Well....I only have been banded a month but I haven't found anything I can't eat! I'll admit a couple of times I kinda got scared of the texture and didn't attempt it (really tough or dry chicken for one)....but the only thing I have missed is my Diet Cokes! And I understand many can drink them with no problems! I felt I needed to give up that addiction though!!! I haven't PB.....but I'm getting my first fill tomorrow so that might change! I chew really well......and eat really slow! I ate PF Chang's last night! Kung Pao Shrimp and fried rice!!! Yummy....but only about 4 shrimp and 1/4 to 1/2 cup of rice! And I was full!!!

Welcome, marnie. Things can only get better. I'll bet you will look back a year from now with wonder at how your life has changed.

I'm also in the process of waiting for approval. I alternate between being scared about it to extremely confident this is for me. Where are you from Marnie?? I'm from Michigan and have BC/BS of Illinois. I have lots of ?'s also... most I've found by searching the topic on the above tabs.

I havn't seen many long termers 5 + years here.... maybe this is more for the begining stages and once you go through it yolu no longer feel the need to come here... who knows???

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
