Considering revision to sleeve from band

Recommended Posts

I had my band removed 5 months ago due to aspiration pneumonia and lots of bacteria in my lungs from throwing up. I had the band put in April 2008 and did very well until the last 6 months when i started throwing up. I want to have the sleeve surgery but I have heard that is it very common to develop GERD and someone I know also developed a hernia and she is not losing weight. She had both surgeries done at the same time? Can that create the issues she had post-surgery? Thanks in advance for any advice, or experiences that you have had

Forgot to mention that I now weigh 162 pounds and going up each week, I feel I need to have a surgical procedure to get me back to optimal weight and keep me there,

@@LoisinStA - your stats current? Sorry but I don't understand why at 125lbs you would go to sleeve -

I had the band and gerd and I had a hernia repair and sleeve done after my band was removed in April. My gerd is gone. I will try to stop taking a PPI at 3 months. I am 6 weeks out now.

GERD can be a real issues for sleeve patients. I have to be on a PPI twice a day at 11 months out, but it's still well worth it to me. It is definitely a risk. You have to think long and hard about whether it's a risk you are willing to take. Any surgery is a risk!

I am 23 days post op from having revision surgery. My band had a slow leak so I had no restriction. So far it has been smooth sailing for me. I have not had and nausea or vomiting. The only reflux I have had is if I lay down right after eating or drinking. I started sleeping with more pillows for an incline. So besides the surprise bill I received yesterday for 60,000 I am very happy with my decicsion. The first 2 wks was the hardest. I paid for mine upfront.

Thanks for your replies. I have many friends who have the sleeve surgery, not the revision, and they are going well, If I pay attention to stop eating or drinking before bed, I am hoping to avoid GERD, I never had the problem with the band.

I had the band from May, 2011 to December, 2014 and was sleeved August 7, 2015. Before the band I had occasional reflux; nothing to see a doctor about. With the band, I had constant reflux that required Prilosec daily. Taking it has become part of daily routine. I would love to stop needing it but I'm also happy I only need it once a day; I can live with that!

I just had revision surgery--band to sleeve-- on 8/11. I'm doing very well. I stayed two nights in the hospital. Glad I did it. The 2nd day post-op was the worst for me, due to nausea, not pain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
