Small children and recovery

Recommended Posts

I have bean lurking here for a while. I am waiting on my insurance for approval at this point. My surgery will be in mid November or early December. My kids will be 4.5 and 1 year. My youngest is pretty attached to me and we still nurse. I am nervous about the recovery and taking care of the kids afterwards. I am also concerned I won't be able to dedicate the time required to take care of myself to help me succeed. Am I crazy for thinking I can do this at this time? Has anyone bean in the same situation and can offer advice?

I have a 3 year old and 5 year old. Within a few days you will be fine for playing and snuggling. Not lifting for about a month. 6 weeks later my stamina is just returning. Do you have help? Would you be alone with them all day? It is much harder to plan and eat healthily taking care of kids so young. I am finding though that I buy and cook more healthy foods now which is a huge benefit for my kids.

My husband will be home with me for the 1st week. Then my mom and sister will be around to help out. The ability to be more active with my kids is a big reason for me having the surgery, but at the same time they need me now. I guess when you have little kids there is no perfect time.

Active with kids was big reason for me too. I threw out my back the week after surgery. I wasn't feeling "fine" for a few weeks but I think you will be surprised at how quickly you will be in the swing of things.

Huh. My youngest two are 4 and a half and 1 as well. They did great. I needed help with my little guy getting in and out of the high chair and crib. The rest can be worked around, especially with help. You're not crazy for doing this and it will be fine. It did take me 6-8 weeks to get my stamina back. It's worth it in the long run because everything in my life is better now. I'll be four months tomorrow. You'll be so glad you did it. You'll need to start weening now though, so you're not still having that struggle on e you're feeling bad and sore. That may be really frustrating for both you and your baby. Good luck. Giving up nursing was hard for me, but necessary and worth it.

Thanks for the positive words! I know everyone will benefit from me being healthier, but it's hard to put yourself first when your mom. I think it's time to start though :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
