So back in November of 2014 I posted a thread asking for advice about my father. His insurance wouldn't cover a bariatric surgery he desperately needed. So I talked to him about self pay and the whole nine yards and he still said "I'll talk to my doctor about it. " but never truly did. I lived out of state with my husband and couldn't be there to make sure he did. This whole last year I'd been feeling like we really needed to get this done. .almost as if his life was actually depending on it.. and I tried and tried.. 5/26/15 my father passed away in his sleep. He had hbp, sleep apnea and I think he was an undiagnosed diabetic.. He was my dad..I never ever thought this would happen..atleast not at his age of 58. He was my best friend.....I miss him so much. :, , (. I'm 23 and am on his same path.. 350 pounds with a bmi of 45. My insurance won't cover it. I know that this is necessary. I feel like because my dad wouldn't do it, I NEED TO. what is everyone's opinion and success stories from having it done in Mexico? My sister and I are both really overweight and want to do this together. Thank you.

((Beautyinprogress)), I am so very sorry to hear about your dad. The loss of a parent at any any age is gut wrenching and to know that this surgery may have saved his life has to be particularly hard. I'm praying for comfort and delight in good memories with your dad. As you undertake your own investigation into WLS, I understand wanting to honor your dad and learn from his situation. I would also encourage you to be personally ready for the surgery and the huge life change. When I lost my mom, people told me not to make any big changes in the first year. For me, that was very wise advice. Best of luck to you!

I had surgery in Mexico and it was the best thing I could have done. Have surgery now when you are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Don't wait; after my Mom passed I had plastic surgery and again the best thing I could have done for myself.

I am sure your father is with you now and would want you to be healthy and lead a long life; try bariatric pal surgeons I am going again for a revision and using Dr Zavalza.

best wishes

I have been researching this surgery for myself for about a year now and that is a big reason why I was so excited to tell my dad what could happen for him if he did this. He liked the sounds of it but didn't want to because "I just want to lose weight myself, I'll be embarassed if I do that because I should be able to do this on my own". That was the last time I talked to him about it in our last phone conversation. I have thought long and hard about whether this is right for me, and I think it is. I know I will have to change everything..and I want to.

I can not talk about the Mexico option but I do want to give my sincere condolences about your dad. I can truly understand, my dad was 54 and died at 390 lbs of a massive heart attack. I was in my 20s at the time and at my highest weight topped out at 376. I'm now in my 30s and am in the final steps to get my insurance approval for the sleeve. I hope all the best for you and your heathy future.

@@BeautyInProgress I'm so very sorry to hear about your dad. My dad is in the same boat basically and a few months ago, we nearly lost him to a massive stroke when he took a nap without his CPAP on. I haven't gone to Mexico myself, but I did have a former neighbor and friend who went down for a Lap band and she said it was quite affordable. She went in like 2006 I think. They travelled down to the border basically and there was someone there to pick them up and take them to the hotel where they stayed. There was a guide who was responsible for getting them anything they needed really. Then she had the surgery and her husband was allowed to watch while it was done even and then she recovered at the hotel for a few days and they drove them back to the border. She had no complaints at all and said she would do it again.

So sorry to hear about your father! A close friend of the families recently had her surgery done in Mexico. She said it was very clean, very modern and she has had no complications or issues. From the posts I have seen here, Mexico seems to be the way to go if you are doing self pay. I wish you the best on your journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
