How long after surgery do you start seeing a loss again?

Recommended Posts

I knew to expect my weight to go up right after surgery due to fluids etc... But how long does it usually take to start seeing the scale go down? I am only one day post op right now.

I gained quite a bit from my hospital stay. I didn't weigh every day, but I know that when I weighed in 7 days post-op, the excess was gone and I had a nice 0.5lb loss :)

Best of luck to you in your recovery. Don't worry about that scale. Focus on healing. The weight loss will happen!

Not sure...was sleeved over a week ago but in no hurry to jump on the scale. Refuse to be controlled by the scale. Have a post op appointment with my surgeon on Thursday so guess I will weigh then. Not worried about how much I lose or how quickly, if I follow my surgeons plan it will work!

I started seeing a drop in the scale the first few days. Of course I spent a lot of time in the bathroom peeing.

The day of surgery I got nothing at all. The day after surgery I got 2 oz of ice chips every 4 hours. It wasn't until day 3 that I had to start drinking Protein shakes.

It's different for everyone. I didn't retain any fluids and started losing immediately, by one week post-op I was down 14 lbs.

It's hard to get your fluids in at first but try your best. Fluids in = fluids out.

Thank you for asking this keddykat75, because I am 2 weeks out and so discouraged. I lost 10 lbs the 1st week after surgery but the scale hasn't moved the past 7 days. It's discouraging because I'm eating so little - how can I not lose weight?

Keddykat, my doctor told me many factors go into the initial weight loss. After surgery while I was in recovery my surgeon told my wife I would lose 10% of my weight in the next 30 days. I actually lost that weight in 17 days, (wahoo!!) That said, during a consultation pre-op he said many lose little the first few days (week?) because the body is in shock and once you leave the hospital (fluids from IV) it is hard to get Fluid in. Once you are able to drink more it will come off for sure, just keep with it. And yes the gas pains suck, they should only last a few days.

This is normal, search for 3 week plateau, most people get it and some get it early, I was one also. The scale didn't move for 12 days then I dropped 10 lbs in 4 days. My doctor said as you lose weight your organs need to recover and shrink with your body, that takes time. Stick with it, it will come off I promise. ( I know it is frustrating, but it will happen).

How do you know if the stalls are due to not taking in enough calories or if it's something else? I lost 52 lbs pre-surgery, but have only lost 8 lbs in the 3 weeks since surgery. I'm walking almost 3 miles daily and my calories in average around 500.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
