One and a half years out - gastric sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

@@jenn1 I'm not worried what people think. I look healthy. I feel healthy. My doctors are happy. I just had total knee replacement surgery. I am so happy I didn't have to go through that heavier. PT and doctors tell me I'm doing excellent for three weeks out.

Actually, funny story to your question.

My husband had an RNY 9 years ago, and his surgeon was Dr Oakley (I think I told you that). Anyway, he got pretty thin, but still within healthy BMI range. When he complained to Oakley at his year appointment about people telling him he was too thin, Dr Oakley said this:

"There are so many overweight and obese people these days, nobody even knows what a healthy weight looks like anymore".

I was one of Dr. Oakley's last patients before he retired. I can see him saying that to your husband. Love it~!!!

I'm actually going to my PCP today. I do agree that most people don't realize anymore what someone at a healthy weight actually looks like. My weight was at 130 about 11 years ago and many people that knew me then don't have the same "you're too skinny" comments. I think the others just got use to me looking a certain (obese) way.

I do feel tons better at this weight with much more vitality and stamina. Part of the problem is that I only told two people about my WLS: my sister and mother. The bad part of that being all those stupid comments I overhear about the "real" reason for my massive weight loss (cancer, eating disorder, drug addiction). Why can't they just accept that some people actually try really hard to get healthy?

Nevertheless, I don't care anymore. There are more important things to worry about other than what neighbors and relatives think. What is most important is getting healthy, which is why I started this weight loss journey in the first place.

I know! I thought that was so cool that you were his last surgery before he retired! He also took my gall bladder out 6 years ago :)

This is a great topic, fun for those contemplating surgery and thought provoking to those of us who are wondering where to go next. I have been stuck in a two month long stall and was wondering "well is this it"? And then boom, 6 pounds disappeared. Now I'm wondering, "do I want to keep pushing for lower weight, more muscle, both." The cool thing is I actually believe I really can control this. It is a decision, not a dream.

Oh, I have not decided yet. I know I need to get rid of the excess skin to get a six pack, body fat is under 20%, I am really vigorous. Many things to ponder...but these are really fun/empowering things to ponder.

Anyone who can go through this is very strong. This is not an easy decision. Everyone should be proud of themselves. Those first few months are rough. I still have problems occasionally - nausea and stomach aches. I still think, know, I made the right decision. My health and self esteem are so much better. I just had total knee replacement surgery. If it weren't for the weight loss, the recovery would be so much harder. Big pat on the back for everyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
