I had the surgery March 3rd and recently have drop foot. Has anyone else experienced this? I do not think it is related to the surgery but it is not any fun.

I'm by no means a medical professional but i remember the term foot drop during one of my physiology classes back in college. I don't want to scare you but many MS patients experience foot drop as one of their symptoms. I believe it is a nerve problem. You should definitely go seek medical testing on this.

What are your symptoms? I've heard of drop foot but don't know anything about it. My left foot has recently gone very stiff and the bones on the outer side of it are painful....I find myself limping most of the time.

I have been to five doctors and no one know the cause of the drop foot. Lapband is the only procedure that I have had recently. No one know the cause and I do not have MS.

I know of at least one other cause of "drop foot", it is called peripheral neuropathy. There are two types:

The most common is diabetic peripheral neuropathy, so if you have diabetes, this could be part of the progression of the disease.

The second is non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This disease has the same progression - loss of neural signals to the voluntary muscles, usually to legs first from the bottom up. My dad has had this for over 25 years (though he was diagnosed only a little over 10 years ago), he is 80 now, and just beginning to have more severe effects - difficulty walking unassisted (has gone to using a cane) due to loss of sensation and "auto" control of his feet and lower legs, etc. For years and years, we just thought he was clumsy! He was diagnosed when he started developing drop foot. The early symptoms include restless leg syndrome, unexplained clumsiness (tripping, etc).

I am sure there are probably other causes, such as specific nerve damage, etc. and some may be only temporary.

if the docs cant figure out the cause, then let a physical therapist treat the symptom. foot drop is caused by interuptions in the neural synapses *sp*. its very common in people who have experianced a stroke. there are electrostimulation devices that can help correct the condition, as well as traditional modalities that can re-educate the flexor muscles of the lower leg. good luck.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
