Lap and out...Bypass or Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I am disgusted with this band.Went to see a new surgeon and am scheduled for a Barium/X-ray to see if the band has slipped or eroded. He only performs 2 stage procedures.Band removal then a waiting period of 3 months....needless to say I ain't jumping for joy over the wait.Without this awful band I will become the Goodyear Blimp!!It got me thinking,Sleeve or Bypass?Pros and cons.He stated that the Sleeve is irreversible and that the Bypass is complex but more can be done if need be.In essence they are both complex.i understand that I am the driver of my own success but I can't fail again. What are the long term success of the sleeve vs band?Need testimonials and thoughts regarding both procedures.

I love my sleeve. I am 6 months out and I have lost 88 pounds. I followed my doctors special diet requirements for the first 3 months and I have had zero issues. I can eat anything I want and my stomach can handle it. That being said, I still make good choices because I don't want to gain any weight back. No bad carbs, no sweets, no junk, no fast food, etc. I basically just have a smaller stomach than I did before so I can put so much less in it. Also, my cravings have been curbed tremendously. I have heard too many horror stories from bypass patients. Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
