Hey VSGers

I am three weeks post-op today, and am now in the soft food stage for the next 10 days. Around August 18 I will transition to the "regular" diet as my surgeon calls it.

My NUT has discouraged shell fish, both now during the soft food AND the regular diet. However, when challenged, she said it is because they can be tougher.

Yesterday I had two raw oysters in a half shell, and they went down just fine. I also like shrimp. I hate the thought of not having any shellfish any longer.

Have any of you had any problems with shellfish? I'd be interested to hear your feedback.

Thanks!

@@JohnT - shrimp is one of my regular meals (grilled/blackened) - no issues. I also chew it really well and cut it into smaller one bite pieces where before WLS I just bit it off and chewed.

I grew up on fish, shrimp & sweet tea! I gave up sweet tea - not giving up shrimp and fish too :P

How far out from surgery are you? When did you start eating shrimp?

And I hear ya on the sweet tea. My "sweet tea" was beer. No more for me! And that's probably a good thing!

What type of shellfish do you eat? And how soon after surgery did you first have it?

@@JohnT surgery was 5/6/15 I am a little over 3 mos post. I had shrimp probably 3-4 weeks out. Been a staple in my diet! tea now is unsweetened with the sugar free lemonade liquid stuff (like Mio) added. An "Arnold Palmer" - but I quit sugar in my tea all together.

I haven't had the opportunity to eat oysters but as soon as I do, I will!

My favorite snack I haven't tried is popcorn. I have pretty much been "corn free" since surgery.

There was just a really long post about this topic last week. I eat TONS of shell fish. Strained cream of shrimp Soup soup and lobster bisque were staples for me during my full liquids phase. Crab salad during soft foods... And once I was on solids, I was eating shrimp at least 2-3 times a week. Shell fish is an amazing source of Protein and is low in fat. How can you go wrong?

I also have been eating crab and shrimp with no issues. I think shrimp is a more dense meat so they may be worried about you chewing it well enough but it can be done with small bites. Good luck!

Sounds delicious! I will try it in a couple weeks!

I was told to wait until six months before eatting it and I took it as a precaution to avoidpossible food poisoning...higher risk with bottom dwellers(shellfish).

At three weeks, shrimp was a little iffy for me. But I had it for dinner just tonight! Along with some delicious ahi tuna poke that my husband picked up at the store.

I would start with a small amount of shrimp -- maybe bay shrimp or something that is already cooked, and is generally soft. Larger shrimp can get a little rubbery when cooked. But I haven't had any trouble with shellfish.

Once I started soft foods I was eating low carb crab cakes. You just have to chew really well. I have switched to Swai fish for this week and it goes down much easier.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
