My Journey Begins

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am just starting my new journey. Have only attended the class that discusses WLS options. I am hoping to be able to have the sleeve, but I learned that because of being diabetic my surgeon may suggest the bypass instead. In the class they said that diabetics have a better chance of getting off all meds and insulin with the bypass. My whole goal in WLS is to get off all my medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol (these last two are not really an issue for me, but more of a preventative measure), Lantus and Humalog insulins, my CPAP machine and most importantly pain med's for constant hip and low back pain. My PCP wanted me to have back surgery, but that scares the bejezus out of me! So I am hoping that weight loss will eliminate the need for that. This pain keeps me from walking too much, and if I push myself I pay for it over the next two days. So I hope that as the weight comes off I can walk, and finally be able to join my family on the fun things they do. I want to thank everyone who shares their tips, advice, personal stories (good and bad), because it certainly has helped me going into this process with all the information I have gained from you! I wish every one of you continued success, and for those like me just beginning, let's enjoy the ride together!

@@katladee, I was diabetic and came off all blood sugar meds day of surgery and have never had to take them again. I am on a 5mg dose for HBP now and half dose for cholesterol. I was sleeved May 15, 2015. I think the sleeve works great for those with these conditions and my surgeon agreed. I think it comes down to the comfort level of the surgeon, so if you want the sleeve, have a deep discussion about the pro's and con's of each with your surgeon. Good luck!

Thank you Ms. Peach! How long were you in the hospital? And a stupid question, is Tomato Soup allowed when I get to the cream Soup phase?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
