Marijuana Use After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Regular Pot head. I have not smoked in over 2 months. Miss it but only that. No withdrawals, husband is the same.

Not banded yet but don't really intend to smoke much this year. If I am paying for this surgery with financing there goes our green money!!!

Pot is expensive....

Anyway, if you are not wanting to cough because of band slipage, you should invest in a volcano vaporizer or one of the cheaper ones. It is practically harmless on your lungs, and you actually absorb more THC with it, therefore you get higher with less. smooth on the lungs and throat.

Bong is still harsh.

I have found blunts smoother, however not the best for your lungs in reality and it wastes weed. But its still my favorite way to smoke it!

anyway good luck with the munchies. :frown:

If you are going to invest in gadgetry. Check out the AWOL. It is an inhaler for booze. You don't have to drink to get drunk.

It must work because a few states have made it illegal.

I am thinking about getting one.

I will add that taking a hit after a stuck episode can relax your throat.

I think I heard that from a little birdie lol

Little birdie toooooo funny!!!!!!!! We are all grown up we make choices and decisions about our lives every day. Working in the treatment field (drug, alcohol, mental health, gambling) I have seen many sad cases of abuse and dependance daily, yet I still drink on occasion. If it does not impact your life in negitive manner then to each his own. LOL

I think that however you reacted to smoking before the surgery is the same post-op. I smoked one week after and had a great time. Just be sure to consider what it did to you before the band, if you got the munchies easily, I'm sure the band hasn't changed that. They gave me Vicedin for pain after the surgery-if you ask me that is way more addictive and causes more liver damage than weed ever could! lol Good luck Cheech!

A former Hippie here,,, so I am not against Pot at all, I believe it should be Legal. If Booze can be Legal, then why not Naturally Grown Marijuanna.

As a Bandster, I have a problem with it..

I would be thinking that the munchies, would cause you to munch , and munch.

That is Defeating the Purpose of the Band.

I can't see these two as going hand in hand.

Same as drinking ! Way to many calories..

But vote to legalize it if it ever comes to it, companies, and Government would make a fortune.

There's no need to get so personal. Yes it's illegal. But no it is not as bad as alcohol or cigerettes or caffine for that matter. It's hard to reverse decades of propaganda out of peoples' minds. Also for the person that assumed they were talking to someone young, I find that demoralizing and extremely deragatory. It is possible to have logical reasoning skills at a young age. And it's also possible to be a self righteous bigot without consciously knowing. Both sides are being condescending towards each other and it's just wrong. There are many people out there that have the wrong information about marijuana. And likely the only reason why it's illegal both recreationally and medicinally is because it's politics. There are no politicians that are willing to put their careers on the line to stand up for it. Those politicians that do stand up for it have other differing views that keep them from being elected.

I've been reading through this thread just to see what other people experience when they smoke marijuana after getting banded, and I am very disappointed. I thought this was a place where I can go to find answers and get support, but all I have found are judgmental people who obviously don't understand the meaning of support! How can someone who has been judged their whole life for being obese judge other people? I just can't wrap my head around it! I understand that everyone has their opinions and everyone has a natural human right to communicate their opinions, but to actually criticize someone who opposes your views is not right. I love my marijuana and am very proud of it and respect people who don't. It is their lifestyle choice and I cannot change that. This stereotype of lazy, uneducated pot heads has embedded itself in society and has conformed people into fearing something that they don't understand! I have been smoking marijuana since high school. I am not lazy and I am educated. I go to a great university and have a 3.7 GPA. I stopped smoking a month before my surgery just so my lungs could be clear. After two weeks pot-op I started smoking again and I have not had any munchies, like the lap band everyone has different experiences. I have friends who are also banded and they smoke so the food goes down better and they have not had problems with munchies. Again, everyone's' experiences will be different. If you feel like it is causing you to gain weight and it becomes a big problem then stop. You have to play it by ear. For me the best time to smoke is in the mornings when my band is tighter and I have a little chest pain.

With all that said, this was my first post. I was banded on 7/28 and had my first fill 9/9, so far I has lost 40lbs. I hope people understand that the world is filled with different people and different lifestyles. Please show the support, respect, and answers people come here to look for. :rolleyes2:

I would definitely say that everyone reacts differently to the use of Marijuana. I hate when I come on a forum like this and see everyone saying DUH you'll get the munchies WHY would you RISK such a thing when you have made such life changing efforts?? I personally did get the "munchies" before when I lived an unhealthy lifestyle and definitely succumbed to it. When I started my journey I still smoked but was able to use willpower to not eat after, I would also like to add that I am currently a senior obtaining my bachelors degree in biological sciences so definitely not a stereotype "pothead bum". In my Pre-op stage I invested in a Hera Vape for dry herbs because the smoking aspect of it is what is going to hamper your healing process I am not going to lie I used that baby the day I came home and it greatly alleviated my pain from the surgery in fact not only did it alleviate my pain it greatly reduced the WORST nausea that I have ever had in my life I was literally dry heaving in the hospital which we all know would be incredibly painful. I am currently two weeks out and still vape I haven't smoked or indulged in the munchies though I do admit without my hunger signals I am able to use it to enable me to eat ( less than 1/4 cup at this stage) I don't over eat because of it and it has immensely helped me through my healing process. I am not recommending it to anyone in any way but if you were to choose to continue this herbal remedy I would suggest you invest in a vape pen as it does not allow the harmful byproducts from combustion to enter into your lungs or pouch. I have just recently been experimenting with infused oil in small amounts as well.

I know it doesn't make much sense to trade one vice for another, but I very rarely drink (once a month, and a couple beers at the most) and I don't smoke cigarettes. I do, however, enjoy smoking marijuana on occasion, and I don't know who or how to ask if this is alright post op. I'm five days out and I wouldn't even think of doing it while I'm still recovering, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this after recovery. I'd really appreciate any advice you guys have. Thanks a lot.

It's been almost 10 years since your post. How have you done with the lapband & using Marijuana? Im going through the same thing now myself. I get my 1st fill in May.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
