So, I had my surgery July 13. I am interested in starting birth control for the first time ever for various reasons- a sudden onslot of adult acne, irregular periods, and sexy time without an unplanned pregnancy reasons. I know for some birth control, it is affected by weight, I'm assuming oral contraceptions will be affected by the different absorbtion... basically, is it too soon to pursue this? If I do pursue it, what has worked for you/what conversations have you had with your pcp/bariatric team regarding birth control?

Your surgeon needs to be the one to okay oral birth control. I know the first surgeon I consulted with told me he didn't allow patients back on oral birth control for three to six months. I know different surgeons do different times. If you are engaging in activities that would get you pregnant please please use something otherwise you could severely jeopardize your surgery and and the health of an unborn which would be hard on you too.

Ive had my Mirena IUD for a few years now and didn't have to have it removed prior to surgery. I'm happy with it but have noticed a lot of break thru bleeding with it since my surgery. Guess estrogen is released as fat burns and screws things up.

I got an iud, no weight side effects, seriously limits periods.

I went on the Nuva Ring - it was recommended by my bariatric doctor and pcp. Since I want to get pregnant after a year, the IUD wasn't the best option for me. It depends on what your long term plans are.

I have been on Depo Provera for years, did not have to discontinue when I had surgery in June and the bonus is that I do not have periods! Would not change a thing.

I have been on the depo for about 3 years. My surgeon never said anything about discontinuing it so I have continued to take it. I haven't had any side effects or weight gain and I don't get a period, so I would try the depo.

I got a mirena iud about 3 months after surgery. I haven't had to worry about getting pregnant at all because it's the last thing I want to do! I have had the absolute worse time with it. It has been a month of hell. I'm so over it the spotting, cramping and bleeding. They keep telling after 3 months it will get better. I have lost my optimism on the subject!! Just a word to the wise!

Depo was fine except I don't want the risk of weight gain!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
