Thanks everyone for your feedback. I went with Dr Troy Houseworth at Franciscan. My surgery date is March 1, 2016. I'm glad to finally be moving on to this stage of the journey.

Did you have a good experience with Dr Houseworth? I'm calling to schedule my initial consultation today!

I work in a hospital system, and I knew I wanted to use the weight loss center associated with that hospital, so I can read my own labs and tests and such.

I went to a consult - there are 3 surgeons there - and the one at the consult I liked. they all 3 had a good reputations. so, I just went with it. I could have met with the other 2 first if I had been not already happy.

I did some basic internet research -- found the two Centers of Excellence bariatric practices in my area.

Then I went to an intro lecture by the head surgeon at one of the practices. He was phenomenal -- a great educator, answered EVERY question asked by audience members (no matter how dumb), was the right age (in his mid-40s, which is something I pay attention to, i.e., old enough to have a lot of experience, young enough to know the latest stuff). He'd done thousands of WLS surgeries.

So then I talked to the folks who ran his practice -- office manager, insurance coordinator, head nurse, nurse practitioner, receptionist, scheduler -- and they were all lovely and competent.

So that's who I went with.

BTW, NO WAY would I schedule WLS with a surgeon I couldn't even meet with before deciding to go with. NO WAY.

Honestly.... I went with the least expensive all inclusive surgeon I could find who practiced at a Bariatric Center of Excellence.

Don't get me wrong, once I found him, I did my research, and would have changed my mind if any red flags appeared, but they didn't.

I'm self pay, and was willing to go out of state, but not out of country.

I had a good experience :)

I was in a similar situation as yours, my insurance only would pay $4000 toward bariatric surgery. After attending three or four seminars from various providers in the local area and researching on-line I visited a doctor based out of Dallas Texas that offers a hiatal hernia special- If you have a hiatal hernia he will fix it (and bill that to your insurance) and do the sleeve at the same time for about $3000 out of pocket

Dr. Clayton Frenzel was an excellent choice in my opinion. But the bottom line what made me decide on him was the bottom line. I could not afford a $20,000 sleeve and did not want to go out of the country. Naturally I did a thorough investigation on line of Dr. Frenzel and found almost universally favorable reviews.

Asking them uncomfortable questions & how/what they answer, that's the issue. They will brag on all the good things. Its the bad ones you need to ask how they handle to find their experience, wisdom, and personality to get you thru in case problems occur.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
