Changing Taste delays

Recommended Posts

So, I had RNY three weeks ago on 7/15 and I am having a hard time drinking the Protein drink. I haven't had hard time until the last few days. I've tried brushing my teeth more and drinking more Water as I can but the Protein shake just taste gritty in a very unpleasant way. I have added an ounce or two of Water to try and thin it out but I just would like to know if anyone else has experienced food taste changes that weren't immediate or if I'm just being weird and need to try something else. The milk isn't bad I'm just really disliking the texture of the shake.

I haven't had my RNY surgery just yet. However, I've read several posts where others post-op persons have similar experiences as you. Many say they have a metal taste in their mouth. It's difficult to drink Water because it now taste like metal. Many have or had difficult drinking their Protein Shakes post op vs pre op it was no problem. They also mentioned having difficulties with the texture as well. So you're definitely not alone.

This is pretty common. Both that nasty taste in your mouth as well as your taste literally changing.

After surgery I could not tolerate many of the Protein drinks I once used. I ended up trying several before I found one that I not only tolerate but really like. For me that grit that comes along with Protein powders is just plain gross. I tried shaker cups with the ball in it, ninja blenders, etc. for me that grit and taste just ensured I would not get my protein in.

I called my surgeons office and they told me to try Premier Protein ready made shakes. They have 30grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. They are excellent and guess what? No grit!

You can buy them in large bulk packs at both Sam's and costco. You can also sometimes find them in smaller packs in some Walgreens stores.

You will continue to find other things that no longer taste right to you.

I didn't do very many Protein shakes post -op simply because I couldn't stomach the way they tasted (either premixed liquid ones or "homemade" ones using powder) in the early stage. At about week 3 I simply gave up on them and started eating Protein Bars - not ones laden with nuts, but the softer, chewier (brownie consistence) ones. I just made sure they were low sugar (i.e. less than 5 g per serving) and I ate them slowly (starting with only 1/2 at a time) and they sat in my tummy fine. I discussed this with my dietitian at my 4 wk appt. and she said that was fine. I was also adding unflavoured Protein powder to whatever food I could (Soups, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, etc.) which she advised was an important thing to do. Another good add-in is non-fat powdered milk - gives a Protein boost.

I'm at 12 wks now and can do some protein shakes/smoothies depending on the ingredients. If you have a blender, I would google low sugar protein smoothies - there's quite a few that are tasty even with the Protein Powder added in.

I really appreciate everyones suggestions! I may see if I can get to the GNC here in town to find something. Today I skipped the shake and my taste buds threw a party. I know I had some shakes pre-op that I really liked.

I was forbidden from Protein Shakes after week 2. The doctor wants his patients to get Protein from whole food.

I'm only three days post op but my experience was that everything tasted stronger. Sweet was super sweet. Super super sweet. Better now but still.

No desire to eat.

My NUT plan includes shakes until you can eat 3oz Protein per meal. in the mean time I've developed an ulcer and am on a new four times a day med. I'm really trying not to be negative but I feel like I'm having several post op complications that I'm not prepared for. I'm feeling really down. I know once I get past all of this it will all have been worth it but right now I am really regretting having surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
