Four days out from my GB surgery. Looking for some helpful advice

Recommended Posts

First: packing list for the hospital. I know it isn't a long stay, but any suggestions for making it easier?

Second: Am I going to feel like walking as I get home from the hospital? I'm anxious to start after reading how good it is for recovery.

Thanks in Advance

I wish I had taken my own heating pad and ear plugs. Hospital provided both eventually - 4 hours after requesting and asking at least every hour.

About the walking - the hospital made me start walking on the first day post-op. Walking immediately after helps decrease the possibility of blood clots and alleviate gas. I experienced the worst of the gas on Day 2 post-op, but nothing too unbearable. I made sure to keep moving/walking, balanced with a lot of rest, when I got home (3 days post-op), and I was doing fairly vigorous gardening 11 days after surgery. Just take your pain meds like clockwork for the first week and make sure to drink Water as advised, and barring any complications, hopefully all will be fine! Good luck!

I bet I'm not the only one who took way more stuff to the hospital than I actually needed!

As for the stuff I did use:

I'm an avid reader and took a book with me (normally read two books a week), but found trashy magazines were better ... easier to pick up and put down because my brain is always a little fuzzy after an anaesthetic and I find it hard to concentrate.

I wore a hospital gown but my own dressing gown, and had some slip-on scuffs so it was easy to get them on when I went walking.

Moisturiser and lip balm.

If you have long-ish hair, take a headband ... you won't be wanting to fluff around with your hair after surgery and a headband will just keep it out of the way without any hassle.

I also took my iPad, so I could check emails, news websites and play games; and a pair of fingerless gloves because I always feel absolutely freezing after surgery.

Clothing-wise, soft, loose track pants, a comfy T-shirt and don't forget the big undies! You'll want them to either sit below your tummy, or be big enough for the waistband to sit above your incisions ... something I remembered from an earlier surgery.

As for the walking, you'll be up and about in the hospital ... short walks, that will become more frequent and longer and the days go by. Your first walk will likely be just around your bed (or from your be to the loo!), and you'll feel much more human once you've been up on your feet. Just keep plugging away with the walking once you get home and you'll be all good.

Best of luck with your surgery.

Best of luck to you, Cutwater.

I wonder if I go ahead and pack my bag now.....will it make the next 5 months go by faster ?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
