Indroduction from the newbie!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I've been surfing the forums for the past week and just felt it was time to make my introduction.

I'm Raven, 34 years old, married with a beautiful 3 year old daugther. I've been overweight for the majority of my life. I've made several attempts to lose weight over the last 10 years. I've tried the Atkins diet, visiting 2 weight loss clinics, joined a gym, and even hired a personal trainer. I've had no problem losing the weight but maintaining has proved very difficult.

I've never really considered WLS until recently. A co-worker was sleeved this past April and after speaking with him several times and seeing his results (60lbs to date), I feel this is what i truly want.

I saw my PCP 2 days ago and they have sent my referral to the surgeons office. I've called to set up my first consultation, just waiting for a call back. I can't wait to hear back from them and get this process started. :)

Good luck Raven, four things you should do during this period of time

Plan - Write down your goals, current measurements and what you need

Prepare - start walking as much as you can, get as healthy as you can, and get ready for the emotional battles to come

Act - jump through all the hoops to get qualified for surgery

Evaluate - start trying post surgery food (esp soft stuff and Protein shakes)

This is just a short list you will find many great resources on this site and lots of support. And look at the pictures for motivation.

I am new to this process too. I just saw my surgeon on Monday. Now I am waiting for the patient advocate to let me know what is next. It is all very exciting! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
