I'm about to start my pre of diet and my dietician said I can have a can of coke zero once a day. I got so happy but is that alright? Not sure what you guys think.

Your dietician is going to be in an extreme minority when it comes to carbonated drinks, especially soda, both naturally and artificially sweetened. Most NUTs say "NO" in capital letters.

I would just let it go now and make your life after surgery that much easier. You may find that you miss enough things already without adding a soda habit to the list. I'm pretty sure that everyone would agree that carbonation after surgery is a big no-no, at least for a while. I've read others that go ahead after some time, but when you are freshly post-op, you need to let your staple-line heal up. I doubt that I'll ever partake in sodas again diet or no, because I found that they just led me down a path of worse and worse choices in the past. It doesn't happen to everyone like that, but they did me no favors.

I am surprised at your dietician. The purpose of the pre-op diet and the meetings is to assist you in changing your food habits for life. Last week I saw my nutritionist and i mentioned how much I miss my Dr. Pepper. I was told carbonation can stretch your stomach, just as drinking liquids while eating does. My sleeve was 12/30/2014.

@@John Michaels I say sure go to for it, if it's pre-op then enjoy it while you still can. I didn't start actually changing my food habits until after surgery (when I had no choice) it wasn't a hard transition for me I just did it. I was never a big soda drinker but if I was and I was cleared by my nut I would have done it. They aren't going to allow you to do something that would compromise you in any way if he/she knows what they are doing. You are saying one can Just during PRE-OP she's not saying that's allowed after.

You can drink coke zero both before and after surgery. After surgery, wait at least 6-8 weeks until your stomach is fully healed, but following that it's completely fine. I drink diet pepsi every day, I'm almost 2 years post-op and I've maintained below goal for awhile now. They tell you not to drink soda because they don't want you drinking the non-diet kind and having all of your calories in Coke. After surgery, some people feel bloated and gassy from soda, but it really doesn't hurt your sleeve at all and if you like it, drink it. It isn't a healthy beverage by any means and I stick with the diet because I don't want the extra calories, but physically there is no reason you can't have carbonation.

I cut out caffeine during my pre-op diet, because I knew I wouldn't be allowed to have any for 30 days post-op, so I wanted to not be dealing with caffeine withdrawal at the same time I was recovering from the surgery.

I obviously haven't drank any soda post-op, but I was literally counting down the days until I was allowed my coffee again on day 30!

If you haven't yet weaned yourself off of caffeine, then limiting to no more than one a day is a good idea.

I weaned myself off of caffeine and carbonation before my pre-op diet gradually. I didn't want to go through caffeine withdrawal post op.

I drank it right up until surgery. I figured I would be heavily medicated during my withdrawal period, anyway. With everything else going on after surgery, I didn't even notice the withdrawal ;)

Of course, like Jamie, I was counting the days until I could have caffine again ;)

@@John Michaels

I gave up soda long before I even thought seriously about soda. Soda just isn't healthy, learn to part with it, if being healthy is your goal.

Some people just care about losing weight by any means necessary but if you really want to be a healthy person make healthy choices.

My nut said soda is ok after you recover from surgery but that it has to be flat. The carbonation will over time increase the size of your stomach.

Flat soda?? Yuck! Better to just get rid of it altogether!

Tell me about it lol. I've cut out soda and only drinking water/tea and 1 cup of coffee a day. Slowly getting rid of the coffee. It's easier than I thought it would

Be for me and I'm still 5+ months prior to surgery.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
