Cindy_D 1 Posted August 16, 2007 I have been told to keep everything: mileage (keep the dates of trips to the clinic for fills, appointments etc if you live > ?km away - check with your tax accountant, but I'm 200 Km), Optifast receipts, physician charges for the physical - several of our docs charged to complete the form - mine was $50.00 cost of procedure not covered elsewhere - apparently Sunlife does cover some portion of the costs but most extended health benefits do not - mine has a section that specifically states weight loss procedures are excluded I am not really all that knowledgable about tax law/process but depending on your tax backet, you could see a refund of about $ 3,000 - 3500.00. I'm thinking your medical expenses need to be about 3% of your taxable income to be considered? Essentially I'm keeping everything, and I'll let them sort out what counts. CandiceNC 0 Posted August 16, 2007 I had my surgery doctor refer me to TLBC. Here in Manitoba, because there is no weightloss surgery here, I had my airfare paid for by MB health, along with a small portion of my surgery. I kept every single recipt and what MB health didnt cover, I claimed in my taxes. MB Health didn t cover airfare taxes, so that was claimed on my income taxes.. Keep EVERYTHING! giblert 0 Posted August 26, 2007 I had surgery in July 2006 and filed my income tax earlier this year. Unless CRA changes their mind, it went through without any problem. I eFiled and there has been no request to see the receipts thus far. I also tried to claim initially via my private insurance (Pacific Blue Cross) but was swiftly turned down. argon 3 Posted August 26, 2007 I eFiled also, the very first day we could... so... March 1st? So don't worry, they still have lots of time to hassle you for your receipts. Mine 'went through' without any problem that I knew of... I got my refund quickly and without any questions, until now. I'm sure it'll be fine. The amount I claimed is the exact amount I HAD receipts for, so I'm not worried. Lucky this thread keeps being brought up, cause I keep forgetting to send 'em away! Pablo 11 Posted October 26, 2010 I had to do the review too. I claimed my kms, and hotel rooms because I had to go to Winnipeg from Sask for my surg. I didnt send a letter from my doctor stating that its the closest, because its the only one that was open at that time. It will be interesting to see if they make me pay back my initial tax refund, or what they will do. Though I am ready to fight if I need too. Dirty buggers!!! CRA is so out to get everyone, they make me sooo mad. They had a lady in Regina send there receipts 6 times and explain why she had to have the surgery. They make me so mad. Okay, done ranting. I am a little nervous, but if they come after me, boy I am going right after them.
