norwood8284 6 Posted August 3, 2015 Hi everyone congrats and your accomplishments but I'm curious. How long after surgery did you start working out or do you workout?
dstined4gr8tnes 65 Posted August 3, 2015 I started around 3 months later and fell on and off. Now that I'm 2 yrs out its very important to exercise as much as possible
MommyMeghan 92 Posted August 3, 2015 I didn't start a steady exercise regime till about 4 months after. I would walk but no actual deliberate exercise. I started going to the gym 4 months post op twice a week 30 minutes and now I'm 1 year out and I go to the gym 5 days a week for at least an hour.
AngelaWilliamsMD 290 Posted August 3, 2015 I started working out a month post op
kellmark 59 Posted August 3, 2015 I'm 4 months out and still haven't started exercising consistently. I'm just now starting to walk 3 miles a day and I just signed up for a 5k in December. I have a bone fracture in my foot I've been dealing with since before my surgery and now that I've lost 60 pounds I'm able to walk for exercise without as much foot pain. JamieLogical 8,710 Posted August 3, 2015 I was supposed to start "brisk walking" immediately after surgery. I didn't get to more intense cardio or strength training until about 3 months post-op.
hockeyfan7 249 Posted August 3, 2015 Today starts my 3rd month and I started Water aerobics today. I have been going to the pool and playing around with my son. We went bowling on Saturday and I had to have my son finish my 2nd game - I couldn't do it.
mmwishart 41 Posted August 3, 2015 I've been doing Zumba several times a week since 2 weeks after the surgery. I'm 2 months out now, and have added kickboxing and weights. I also walk most days

AvaFern 3,516 Posted August 3, 2015 I started running at 3 weeks and I was back in boxing class at 5 weeks post-op. I'm not a fan of lifting weights, so I did that minimally after surgery and up to now when I am about 2 years post-op.
ctsang 10 Posted August 3, 2015 Taster a week, I walked on a treadmill and a recumbent bike.
10nsStar 23 Posted August 4, 2015 I'm eleven days. Did a light Pilates workout. Hit some Tennis Balls. Walking 5 miles a day. Still a little sore to run. But not that far away. I say your body will let you know. My Dr. Told me I could start when he released me from hospital. Now I know he wasn't all that serious. As I had signed up to play in a Tennis Tournament. I withdrew realizing that wasn't going to happen! But do plan on playing in one in two weeks. Hoping my endurance is there.
evett 44 Posted August 4, 2015 Walking is hard for me as I had surgery from bone cancer in my leg, so riding a bike is less painful for me. I rode this wknd for the first time post op (july23). I rode 19mi Saturday & 21 mi Sunday. I was severely winded & soo thirsty. It took me longer & was harder but I feel good knowing it is possible. I am having a hard time drinking Water & Protein Drinks. I have about 30 oz of water & 11oz Protein drink/day & only lost 11lbs
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted August 4, 2015 @@evett I would hold off on the exercise until you can get your Water intake up. You don't want to end up in the hospital with dehydration! I had a rough time getting my water in early on too. The swelling in my stomach and esophagus made even the tiniest sip an ordeal. The good news is that it improved drastically once the swelling went down a couple of weeks post-op. Try experimenting with different temperatures of water too. I have a lot easier time drinking ICE COLD water or hot beverages (tea and coffee). I can't drink room temperature or luke warm water, even 11 months post-op. Some people are just the opposite and an ONLY drink room temp water. So experiment and see what works best for you!
evett 44 Posted August 5, 2015 @@Jamie, just had my 1st post-op appt & got scolded. Doc said NOT cleared for cycling for at least a month and only if I get my protein/water goals met! Said I won't heal & am dehydrated. My bad just trying alternative to walking.
