I am 12 days post up. I feel hungry more than once a day and I am sure it's not head hunger because I actually have the hunger pain and sound.

I hear they say you never feel hungry in the first year . What about my situation here? It's really bothering me.

@@khaled - have you drank Water and waited about 30 minutes to see if the pain and sound come back? How long has it been since you ate? Are you eating Protein first?

I am actually on full liquid. All I drink is milk and some juice plus yogurt thinned with milk. I HATE Protein Shakes they taste disgusting. I tried different brand but they all taste terrible.

@@khaled - IMO, you need to call your NUT. I was told to stay away from juice (too many sugars) and milk. I don't know what plan your surgeon has you on post-op. Clear liquids now? If not, you can probably have strained Soups like cream of chicken, broccoli and cheese, egg drop - my faves. That may eliminate the "hunger" you are feeling. Sounds like you need Protein and you won't get it from juice. Milk a little and depending on the yogurt it could be very little. Are you eating greek yogurt?

No I not eating Greek yogurt. My NUT says in week three you can eat it. By the way I am drinking almond milk which has zero sugar. Also I am taking apple or orange powder and then mix with Water, that is my juice. It has zero sugar but very low calorie. The brand called great value and you can find it in Walmart.< /p>

@kahled I had the same strange thing happen. It lasted until week 3. I was a bit upset as my doctor specifically told me I would not be hungry after surgery for probably at least 12 months. It went away after 3 weeks and now I just have to remind myself to eat. I believe it was some sort of feedback loop between my brain and my enteric nervous system that just kept going on for awhile and then stopped when there were no more inputs to the enteric system.

Okay, whoever told you you won't be hungry for a year is a big fat liar. However, there are a few potential explanations for being "hungry" this early. First, it sounds like there is NO WAY you are getting enough Protein if you aren't drinking Protein shakes. Almond milk is all well and good, but it only has like 8 grams of Protein per serving. Protein is what fills you up and keeps you from getting hungry. You will need to find other ways to get in your protein if you can't find a shake that you like.

Second, are you on a proton pump inhibitor? Acid can often mimic hunger, so if you are not on a PPI like Nexium or Prilosec, it could be acid.

Third, are you getting enough Water? Thirst can often mimic hunger as well.

Yes I am taking acid medicine plus some other medication. And I drink large quantities of Water with no problem. Only problem is I don't drink Protein Shake and this maybe why I feel hunger.

@jamielogical I will let my surgeon know you think he is a big fat liar. You can let him know which medical school you went to and the thousands of surgeries and patients you have dealt with.

Heh. I can only speak from my own experience, not any medical training, unfortunately. I'm 11 months out and I have definitely been hungry many many times. Once I started really working out a lot, I had to add a snack between Breakfast and lunch to ward off hunger in the mornings. And I had to add some carbs to my afternoon snack (added kashi Cereal or granola to greek yogurt) before my workouts so I had enough fuel to get through them without getting light-headed. I also get what my family refers to as "hangry" if I go more than 3-4 hours without eating. It's never a problem when I'm in my normal routine, because I make sure to eat on a schedule. But if I am traveling or on vacation or whatnot and manage to go 3-4 hours without eating, I get super moody. The people around me notice before I do. My husband and I went on vacation with my parents twice this spring and on the second trip, my mom started carrying around peanuts and turkey snack sticks in her purse and forcing me to eat them when I started acting "hangry".

@jamielogical Understand your point, but realize your experience does not make an experienced, trained professional a "big fat liar".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
