numbness after surgery

Recommended Posts

On Tuesday 7/28, I had RXY surgery. While recovering in the hospital, I noticed that my right hand was a little bit numb. It wasn't bad, but noticeable. Today, 5 days later, I have feeling back in my thumb and index finger, some in my middle finger, and my ring and pinky fingers are still pretty numb. I am sure this is related to the surgery as I didn't have this before.

Has anyone experienced this?

I had IV's in both hands (my left was only stuck once). My right hand got butchered. They failed to get an IV line started in the right hand at one site, then they placed another IV in me during surgery, once that IV was removed, I was stuck 2 more times in the right hand for blood draws and twice in the right forearm. I suspect that has something to do with it!! I also found that I have numbness in my left leg near my knee on the outside part and below the lowest incision and above my belly button spanning about 4" on either side of my belly button.

I am thankful that I have a consultation in the morning with my surgeon, so I will be bringing this up to him!

I had some numbness in my right thigh on the upper side. Once I went in for my post-op 2wk visit I brought it up to my surgeon and he said that mine came from the way I placed on the table as well as being in that position for a long time. He said that in due time that it would subside. It has gotten better.. Thank God!!

I had my consultation with the nurse (sadly the surgeon wasn't available) this afternoon. She booked me for an appointment on Wednesday to be evaluated by the surgeon to see whether anything needs to be done.

Based on what I have seen people report on here and from outside research, this seems to be a fairly normal thing after surgery- but on occasion can be an indication of other problems. I'd rather be safe than sorry, so it's off to the office I go!

I am 10 dayd post op and i am experiencing the same with numbness on fingers. It gets better but if I move around it doesn't happen as much. I had an IV in each hand too.

I feel like moving around would help me with the numbness. Thankfully now that I am a week out, I feel better and I feel like I can walk more.

I had numbness in my right thigh and knee that took about 2 wks to get better. I also had numbness in my left buttock-I still have some numbness there but it has improved a lot. Hopefully it continues to get better. My surgery was 5/28.

I saw the surgeon this afternoon. He said that the numbness in my right hand is due to 2 things. 1- the way in which I was placed in surgery 2- the fact that my hand and forearm were used as a pin cushion! He said the feeling should come back as the nerve "wakes up" after another week or so. In the meantime, I'm supposed to keep it elevated, iced if desired, and to use my hand as much as possible.

As far as the numbness around my outer left knee, I was also strapped there during surgery and that he and others were leaning into me there during portions of the surgery and this too should go away relatively soon.

I have another follow up next week, so we will see how things go then!

If your surgeon has an on call number, I suggest you find out what it is. I have used my surgeon's number twice already and it has been very helpful. Since I don't know what's normal or not- it's nice to be able to ask the surgeon directly. It's definitely helped to put my mind at ease.

I forgot to post an update after my appointment the other day!

The numbness is still there, but I now have different sensations (hard to even describe what they feel like) depending on what I am doing. My surgeon says that this is a good sign, as it is a sign the nerves are waking up. It's now been 16 days since my surgery....I think my nerves should have had enough time to wake up already.

I go back in another two weeks for a checkup....and I'll be sure to follow up with him again if the numbness hasn't improved.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
