How soon post-op (RNY) did you try protein bars?

Recommended Posts

So, I have a lot of Quest bars in the pantry which are calling my name for a quick Breakfast (well not really quick but maybe easy) but I am SCARED! NUT said 6 weeks post-op would be ok and I am 8 weeks out now but haven't tried yet and given my lack of success with meat, I am sort of chicken about trying something as firm as a Protein bar ... Anyone else have success / failure at this point with the bars? Should I wait longer? I know I have read some posts about how something in them can cause dumping in some folks.

I waited til 8 weeks and I can not eat them. Even 1/4 of one sits like a brick in my intestines and has me doubled over in pain. I'd try a few bites and see how it goes, most people I've talked to did not have a problem. Good luck!

I have had great luck with Protein Bars despite their thickness. I still have issues with meat but not the bars. Just try little bites at a time. Best of luck. Btw, i had my RNY June 16.

I'm 12 weeks post-op and I started Protein bars probably at about 3-4 weeks post-op (because I can't stand the taste of most of the Protein powders/shakes). I haven't had any problems with tolerating them - but initially I stayed away from the nut heavy ones and went instead with the softer, Cereal type (e.g. Atkins, Pure Protein, etc.). In talking with my dietitian, the key is to make sure they have less than 5 g of sugar per bar. Now that I'm farther along post-op I eat the ones with nuts and they are fine, but I still adhere to between 5-10 g of sugar per serving (that applies to any food).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
