Hello to all, just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Kelly and I'm 34 years old and weigh 360 lbs. at 5'8", with a BMI of 56 (super morbidly obese). I've begun the journey towards the lap-band surgery (probably some time in November of this year), due to my insurance company requirements, I'm having to do the 6 month doctor supervised weightloss first. I'm 2 months into it (July is month 3). My surgeon is Dr. Cywes in Jacksonville, Florida. Does anyone know him? Input would be helpful. He seems to be a good guy and very qualified. Anyway, I'm looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life and any advise or suggestions/tips would be appreciated. You are all my inspirations. Keep up the great work. Peace to all. :help:

Hi Kelly, welcome to lapband talk forum. I didn't have to do 6 months preop diet so I'm sure that is challenging. I am down 56 lbs this year. It will be so exciting when you hit the 299 mark, then 200 mark. I am 26 lbs away from the 199 mark and I can't believe it. I still love being banded. Good luck.

Hi Kelly,

I'm new as well. I just joined to get some support for my journey. I have a psych consult 13 Aug and I'm waiting on my nutrition consult. I weigh 289 and I'm 5'2. I, too, am morbidly obese. I'm hoping this band will help me get back to a weight more favorable to my health. The weight is really causing me problems......knee pain, winded when climbing stairs, unable to run, hard to tie shoes, and the list could go on and on for hours. But, I've decided with the blessings of my DH to pursue this journey and I am optimistic that I will be banded by October with some obvious results by Christmas. Many blessings for your journey.

Dee

With God, all things are possible!!!

Hi Kelly! Welcome to LBT :) Congratulations on your decision, it sounds like you're on your way.

I was banded in Oct 2005 and still come here for support and friendship, it helps me to know that others are going thru the same issues and we're on this journey together.

I hope we can offer the support you are looking for.

I'm in TX, so not familiar with your Dr. You might try to start a thread on the Florida forum: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f30/ to see if others can give input.

Wishing you all the best,

Karla

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
