Gah! I hate meal replacement shakes!

Recommended Posts

Nearly two weeks post op, and in the last month I have lost 10kgs which I'm thrilled about. But I am developing a passionate hatred for the Optifast. We have other shakes in NZ, but NUT said the Optifast had the best nutritional profile post surgery.

I've got a whole week more on the liquid diet, and I'm dreading each shake (2 a day). Thinking about having an optifast bonfire in 7 days.

Just having a wee vent.

By Meal Replacement drinks do you mean ready made drinks? I was really concerned that I would hate the Protein drinks too post op but love them. Can your NUT suggest anything else?

On a side note, great weight loss !! Congratulations :D

Finding something you will actually drink is more important than the brand. I'd discuss that's with the Nut. I'm sure they would rather you be drinking something you both can agree on than nothing at all because you hate it.

We don't have a lot of choice for Meal Replacement. Plenty of Protein powders, but they don't have a good nutritional profile as a stand alone meal replacement. It's only one more week before I can have real food, even if it's puréed. Just need to put on my big girl panties and push through.

I'm just really over sweet drinks. Was salivating at the kids potato and gravy - but NUT says no Pasta, rice or potato for 9 months minimum.

I suspect she's trying to achieve a prolonged state of ketosis to maximise weight loss in the first year. I'm down with that.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
