VitaleEM 44 Posted August 1, 2015 Has anyone else out there discovered hiatal hernia years post op? I'm so worried it will get worse and require surgery due to our new sleeved shaped stomach, which seems like it may lend itself to this kind of thing. SleeveandRNYchica 1,155 Posted August 1, 2015 I will be 3 years post op 10/1. I found out in May, I have a hernia and other issues. I do require additional surgery.
2013sleevegirl 126 Posted August 1, 2015 If you don't mind me asking, what were your symptoms and other problems? How did they find this?
SleeveandRNYchica 1,155 Posted August 1, 2015 I got pregnant 11 months post op. I was working out, following plan but losing slow, which I made peace with. I had a difficult pregnancy, baby is healthy and labs were always good. I has heartburn but didn't think much of it. But post pregnancy heartburn was bad and I was not losing at all. So I found a new surgeon that would take my case. He ordered barium swallow and EDG. Those test confirmed a hiatal hernia, twisted (angulated) sleeve, and GERD. My sleeve is twisted so under the twist there is pouch effect at the bottom. So food is not exiting the way it should... Anyways, I have to have revision surgery. I still have to go through insurance requirements as I am converting to RNY. I have my last NUT appt 8/8.
2013sleevegirl 126 Posted August 1, 2015 I'm sorry to hear that. Is conversion to RNY the only option? I've heard of people without the sleeve having a hiatal hernia but I didn't know that was a treatment for it. Was heartburn your only symptom?
SleeveandRNYchica 1,155 Posted August 1, 2015 He said he could resleeve me, but may not "cure" heartburn. Honestly, I don't think I would have made goal with the sleeve and he doesn't either. So for me RNY is my only option. food feels like it sits in my chest and yes those where my only symptoms
VitaleEM 44 Posted August 1, 2015 My symptoms were heartburn, reflux at night in bed, and bloating.
