Because dark fingernail polish can interfere with medical equipment such as a pulses ox machine ( used to monitor your pulse and oxygen levels) We need to be able to monitor our patients especially during surgery.

Something similar here. I was told that one way they can observe if you are getting enough oxygen is to see what color your fingertips are. Nail polish would hinder that observation.

I had my nails painted and had no issues! There was a time that the pulse of machine could not read through the polish but those days are gone! But they can monitor your oxygen by checking your nail beds and that can't be done with polished nails! My nail polish is like some girls lipstick.....I just need it!!!

I wasn't allowed to wear nail polish during my surgery. However, since I am truly addicted to nail polish. I packed a bottle, and as soon as I got to my room after recovery I painted my nails- bright pink!!!

My hospital doesn't use a clip-on pulse ox anymore. It looks more like tape or a bandaid that wraps around your finger, between the second and third joint, with a wire attached. Kept my polish on the whole time.
