Having a lot of pain/spasms

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve done 4 days ago. I was already back in the ER with severe, extremely painful spasms. I have never felt anything like this in my life. Also I have horrible bloating and pressure in my upper abdomen. I am MISERABLE. My doctor initially recommended the bypass (due to my GERD), but I changed my mind and got the sleeve (due to my severe IBS and wasn't too crazy on the re-routing). Did I make a mistake? Will this pressure and spasms ever end?

If they are located in upper stomach then I had the same spasms. They subside by time.

I am 9 days post up and barely feel them.

My doctor says it is just a reaction to the new stomach plus the muscle is healing.

They have me Bentyl but it's not helping. Even the pain medicine isn't helping. I mean the incision part is feeling better, it is the spasms that are killing me and feels like a severe belly ache.

Sounds alot like esophageal spasms. I had them really bad. Ask your pcp for nitro. It was the only thing that helped mine. I had mine at the beginning right after surgery and again after the flu. Apparently any time the sleeve is aggrivated I get it.

I hope u feel better, I know how miserable it is!

Oh before I forget, avoid really cold or hot fluids and spicy things. This can bring on an attack.

Nitroglycerin tablets. They give them to stop heart attacks but it also works for esophageal spasms. Sounds freaky right? I was weirded out by it but the pain was so miserable I was willing to try anything. It did work (most of the time... there were a few that it didn't resolve completely but it at least lessened it so I wasn't in tears).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
