I am due to have my sleeve on 3rd Sept

Had my dietician appointment yesterday, and she told me not to drink for30 mins before a meal and 2 HOURS after!!!!

Really? 2 hours? I was expecting maybe 1 hour?

Is this advice unusual?

Mine told me not to drink for 15 mins before and 15 mins after. Each NUT is different.

I was told to wait 30 before and 30 after. I usually try to wait closer to 45 after I eat. I find the longer I wait to drink the longer I stay full.

2 hours? How are you possibly supposed to get all your Water in like that? My nutritionist told me 5 minutes before and 20 minutes after, but in reality, I can rarely ever drink sooner than about 40 minutes after, because I still feel too full from my food.

Edit: seriously.... let's do the math on this. Say you eat 5 times a day: three meals and two Snacks, that's 12.5 hours a day that you aren't allowed to be drinking (not even counting the time it takes you to actually EAT). If you are awake for 16 hours a day, that only leaves 3.5 hours to get in your minimum of 64 ounces of Water. That means drinking over 18 ounces per hour during the times you are allowed to drink. It was WEEKS post-op before I could get in more than 1 ounce in 15 minutes! Even now, 11 months post-op, it's pushing it for me to drink 8 ounces in a half hour....

Are you 100% that you heard correctly? And if so, I'm wondering if this was meant for long term or maybe they were explaining some phase of recovery and how they want you to proceed. I agree with the others who have posted that waiting 2 hours to drink after each meal would not be sustainable long term. I worry that you'd become dehydrated. Let's just say you ate 3 meals a day and waited 2 hours after each one... that's 6 hours a day off limits to intake liquids! Something doesn't sound right. Maybe give your nut a call or clarify further at your next visit?

Seems excessive. I don't feel hungry faster if I drink after eating, but still need 20-30 minutes because it just HURTS. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack and die.

Yeah, it's usually a good 40 minutes for me if I eat a full meal. I can usually drink a little sooner if I've only eaten a smaller snack. I think the real key is to not eat and drink at the same time. That's when you really get into trouble with flushing food through your stomach too quickly and not feeling full as long.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
