Still Confused. WHO am I supposed to be seeing? Federal BCBS

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I keep getting conflicting answers on who I am supposed to be seeing for my "medically supervised weight loss program." My insurance is Federal BCBS, and they require 3 months of the supervised visits. Some people are saying I should be seeing a nutritionist for these appointments, while others are saying I should be seeing my PCP. I know I need a nutrition consult, as well as psych consult in addition to those. Can someone, anyone, please shed some light on this for me? I have called BCBS to clarify twice now, and it seems as if they are just reading from the handbook, and not giving me any clear answers. Thank you!

Have you been to a WLS seminar with a surgeon, yet. If so, and if it's a good office, they should have an insurance coordinator who can help you clarify the insurance requirements. Chances are pretty good they have many patients with the same insurance/requirements and can give you some insight.

I am with FEPblue too (basic) I am using my surgeons NUT program. I think it varies by office...

It definitely varies. In NC, the surgeons office wouldn't even see me until I completed my supervised diet requirements for my insurance. I transferred to NY, and I'm doing everything through the surgeons office. Thanks guys!

Looking at the plan brochure, it looks like you should be covered by doing the following: I would visit your PCP first, and have them note in your file your weight and that you're trying to lose weight and seeing a nutritionist, then see the PCP monthly for weigh-ins along with the nutritionist. That way, all of your bases are covered. It's medically supervised, because you're getting a recommendation from your PCP and monthly weight monitoring, and it includes nutritional counseling, which is one of the requirements. Make sure that you've got 30 days between appointments, but don't skip a calendar month. You'll need 4 appointments with the PCP and nutritionist: one to start, and then at 30 day intervals until you've covered 90 days.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
