Neuropathy Numbness

Recommended Posts

Has anyone experiences leg or body numbness after the surgery? I have been having this horrible problem. Did you see a neurologist? How was this condition treated?

You did not tell us where the numbness is. Are you diabetic? Do you take any statin meds? Have you ever had chemotherapy? Do you have any back/spinal issues? If you can give more info we might be able to help.

I've had no medical problems or conditions prior to my surgery. The numbness in from my body is pretty much from my chest down. Although it does sometime reach my head. I've read that Vitamin difficiency can cause several neurological problems in Bariatric patients, although I've never met anyone who has had this so that is why I've been asking on here. I've read that these neurological problems can be permenant. So I am hoping to hear from anyone that has had this happen. Thank You for your reply.

teecee, this sounds really serious. I do recall having some numbness from waste down after i had my first c section but not with this surgery.. It did go away eventually even though i can swear that i still feel it every once in a while... Talk to your doctors as soon as you can. Better save than sorry. Good luck. And i really hope it's nothing.

Thank You. I have seen one Neurologist and am waiting to see another. The first one didn't come up with anything. I asked him many questions about neuropathy and bariatric surgery he didn't really answer any of them. I asked if he had experience with working with neuropathy caused from Bariatric surgery and he walked out of my hospital room. He was very condescending and rude. I am hoping to get a second opinion but have to wait months to see another neurologist where I live.

My surgeon first referred me to the neurologist because he said my symptoms have nothing to do with my surgery,( Yet ive been able to read about neuropathy associated with batiatric surgery,) Which I don't believe because I did not have any of my current physical problems prior to surgery.

Hi. I been experiencing numbness and sensitivity on my right leg. The pain was so severe I had to go to the ER. They couldn't figure out what was causing it. Luckily I got a hold of my surgeon and was told I'm getting a reaction from the BOVIE PAD they placed on my leg during surgery. The prescribed me a lidocaine patch and it has helped but not I cannot put anything in my pants pockets because the area is so sensitive. I have an upcoming appt to see a neurologist. It's such an annoying pain. I was never told about the pad being used. I've read people have had burns from the pad.

I have this problem. It is from a Vitamin deficiency, namely Vitamin b1.

It is very common to have this issue when malnourished. I have the numbness in my legs.

I had a blood test done to find out what was wrong. I'm now supplementing B Vitamins.

I hope you feel better soon

That's weird that doctors act like they don't know when I have also read many stories of this happening to bariatric patients. I had my surgery 7/28/15 and have had numbness on my right thigh since surgery. I freaked out thinking I might have a blood clot and I injected myself with the enoxaparin, only to be scolded by the nurse because I injected myself 3 hours earlier than I should have. I kept calling and no one seems to really address the problem. They say it might be from the anesthesia or nerve damage (!) but... "On to a more important subject" is what I felt like. Um I have pain! It's not just numb, it feels like pins on my thigh! I really hope you get a straight answer. Keep us posted. I will talk to my surgeon soon, I'm just hoping this goes away soon!

Thank You very much for your reply. How much B1 do you take ? and how long Did you have the numbness before you started taking the B1? Is the B1 you take in pill form? Sorry for so many questions you are the first to respond that has had the problem and has been treated for it. How long did you take the B1 until you started feeling relief from the numbness. My leg muscles are really starting to disappear? Did you also do physical therapy? Once again Thank You for your response !!!

Hi. I had those same symptoms of pins and needles to thinking of blood clots. Ask your dr about the bovie pad. I was given a Rx for lidocaine patch and it has helped. I still feel the pain but not as extreme. I'm hoping it gets better over time.

@atontor: yes it is! It feels weird too and it gets more painful for me when I'm in bed and that's when it gets to where it feels like my leg's on fire!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
