I had RNY Wednesday and I'm feeling great. However, anytime I drink anything, I get these loud gurgles in my new stomach and eventually I burp. It is so loud. Will this diminish or go away as my new stomach heals?

Well, there is good news and bad news, LOL!

The bad news is, I am 10 months post op and I still gurgle when drinking as well as eating.

The good news is, you get used to it and almost forget about it unless you are in a room with no sound.

I think it is my grouch pouch telling me she is happy that I am feeling her something. LOL!

I was drinking with a straw. Stopped that and now the gurgles/burping reduced significantly.

Glad to hear you stopped using a straw, it can put extra air in your tummy and in the beginning that can be painful.

I was told no straws at all post op. Then in June I had neck surgery and am not allowed to tip my head back so now I have to use a straw. I notice that I do get extra air in my tummy but because I am healed it is not painful.

Straws aren't a good idea for those of us who've had our innards rearranged! As Djmohr says above, you'll end up swallowing lots of air.

As for the noises, yes ... the pouch can get a little chatty! I'm just over 2 years out from my surgery and it's not so noisy all the time, but there are still days where the gurgles make themselves known, usually after drinking Water.

I still gurgle. Some come out like a huge hiccup. Everyone laughs and then we move on. The noises in my body are so strange, but you do get use to it. Now when I burp, it's loud and gross. I just apologize. I really have no control over it. I'd much rather it come up than out the other in.

I'm glad I can still burp after this surgery. I love a good, righteous burp. Feels so good!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
