Barrett's Esophagus. Good News. Correction. Great News

Recommended Posts

Back in May I was having a lot of heartburn, indigestion, pain, and nausea. I had already seen a WL doctor and he suggested that I do the bypass instead of the sleeve because of all my heartburn and indigestion. In the process of this I went to the Gastro doctor and may they did a colonoscopy and a endoscopy. I found out that I have Barrett's esophagus and ulcers in my esophagus. For those of you who don't know, Barrett's esophagus means that I am precancerous. They put me on medication and she wanted to scope me again in 45 days. I was scoped on July 17 and they call me with the results today. No more Barrett's esophagus and everything is looking good. I still have gastritis in my stomach and the same type inflammation in my esophagus. She said to continue my medication. This is better news to me than being approved for weight-loss surgery, Because there is no cancer. I see her in about four weeks and she may discuss hernia repair because my GERD is so bad

I think weight-loss surgery is on hold for me right now until I get this stomach and esophagus healed. The other good news is I have drastically decreased my Coke intake and no weight loss.

I'm also scheduled for major eye surgery on August 12. This is one of the reasons I chose to back off on weight-loss surgery. But again I am cancer free in Jesus name. Amen

Thank goodness! You definately need to take care of yourself and it sounds like you made the right decision to wait on WLS.

I wanted to share with you tha I too was planning on the sleeve but it was recommended by both my bariatric surgeon as well as my enterologist that I have RNY because I had severe Gerd. I cannot tell you how many nights sleep I missed because I was up walking the floors with stomach and chest pain from that disease.

I went ahead with the bypass and low and behold, I have never had Gerd or heartburn since and I can pretty much eat anything. All of the things that used to set me off, I can now enjoy. I am so glad I went this route.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you continue to get good news!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
