Recommended Posts

Hey i am getting my band the 18th and just have a few questions...

How long did you wait to drink again after getting the band??

What do you like to drink....? --out of curiosity.

Those that can drink beer...what kind? I really love microbrews from a brewery here and im just curious if some of u can still handle that?? If u cant handle beer what happened when u tried it?

Do you feel tipsy a lot faster than u used to??? i am assuming so but some people are lightweights in the 1st place. im not i can drink a lot lol.

THANK YOU FOR YOU THOUGHTS....

I got banded on 9 December 2005, so in the Christmas season. I did wait until Christmas Eve to have a drink, and I took it very easy, since it was champagne! I had one or two on Christmas day and perhaps another one or two on New Years Eve.

I'm not a heavy drinker, but I do drink moderate amounts of white wine, sometimes red, three or four times a week - just a glass with dinner usually. Its actually good for you. For the most part I'm waaaaay past needing alcohol to loosen up or actually wanting to get drunk at the ripe old age of 39, but I do love good wine.

I dont get tipsy any quicker, but I dont really drink a lot either, I do notice though that my intake is curbed by my band because anymore than a glass or two and it starts to really burn my stomach, gives me heartburn. And for ages I drank a sip or two of wine whilst eating but now it really burns to do that too, although I'm fine to drink the wine slowly after my dinner - yes, I know you shouldnt drink so soon but I've never taken any notice of that rule, it doesnt seem to make a difference to me.

1)I waited about 2/3 months

2)I usually drink tequila, gin, wine (any type), beer, almost anything :)

3)I can handle beer, not a lot but i can get some down if i don't rush it

4)I get drunk in a blink of an eye, nothing compared with the before where i could never get drunk

I used to be a 'gourmet' beer drinker...stouts, dark ales, etc. My surgeon/nutritionists strongly recommend that I avoid beer (or any carbonated or alcoholic beverage) due to the empty calories adding up fast and the carbonation possibly stretching the pouch.

They've shown that bypass patients are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol, because of the 're-routing' of the small intestine and because they actually have a much smaller stomach post-surgery. Maybe for banders it would be because of the lower body mass once you've lost weight...the same amount of alcohol would produce a higher level in the bloodstream?? (just guessing)

I'm guessing that beer for me will be an extremely occasional thing...maybe when I get to goal I'll have some more often. Even in the past, I drank beer for the rich flavor...rarely had more than two in an evening, and that was usually once or twice a week. I'm paranoid about drinking and driving, so if I'm at a picnic or evening function, I never drink. My dad was an alcoholic and drove drunk all the time.

I can drink just about anything. I definitely go slower with the carbonation. I like Coors Light, tequilla and champage.

I am so freaking out about my pouch maybe stretching. I have had one fill and it seems like I still can eat what I want....I have been drinking beer and some/very little pop...The weird thing is I can drink tons of Water, did this stretch my pouch?????

If you have any insight please let me know.

Mikesmom, you probably haven't stretched your pouch. You have only had 1 fill. It took me 5 to get to the optimal fill level. Hang in there. I drink beer all the time without an issue.

Ok, here is me take on this!

I am a heavy social drinker a few times a year. Now I am sloshed after a few drinks, I am a martini girl. Any kind of martini! I also drink Guiness beer and other dark lagers. I no longer drink those, I haven't even tried since the band. It was about 4 months before I drank again with the band, and I did NOT do a good job of monitoring myself with it, be careful the first time, trust me!

I was NOT a lightweight. Literally I could drink grown men under the table, now I am much more lady like! :girl_hug:

Ok I guess I'm real bad compared to most of you. I do drink on a regular basis, usually 3-4 times a week. I do not drink beer because the carbonation does kinda bother me. You do definately get tipsy a lot faster now.

I enjoy red wines.

I have one glass a night for relaxation.

I also wondered if it was ok with the band.

My girlfriend had the band years ago and she said wine was fine.

My nutritionist even said no more than one or two three- four times a week.

It's good for you if you don't abuse it.

I waited until two months after surgery and then I was very cautious. I dirink white russians, because I figure the milk is providing some nutritional value. :girl_hug: I drink wine. I get a LOT tipsier a LOT faster, but I think that may just be because I weigh 70 pounds less. Oh, I had an awesome frozen margarita this weekend. I probably drink about once every other week. I just want to avoid the empty calories and anything that is bad for me. Plus, hangovers are not fun.

I was drinking again w/a month. Mostly fruity things like Zoombies, Sangrias, Bellini's, typical TGIF stuff like Electric Lemonades, etc. I loved Corona Light w/grenadine before banding, but I am too scared to try beer now. I tried like 2 sips of soda maybe 3 month out of surgery and my stomach immediately began hurting horribly. I don't want to ever drink anything carbonated again.

For some reason, I really don't want to drink like I used too and I only get one drink if I do which is rare compared to my 3 or 4 before. One drink really seems like enough now or I might have a sip of someone elses.

I waited about 4 to 6 weeks before I had my first drink. I like sangria a couple of nites a week to relax and keep my cholesterol in check but I do have a tendency to have a glass or two of brandy on the weekend especially since I've been going to barbeques or parties for the past couple of weekends. I stopped using soda and just add a little ice and Water (you get use to the taste of the water) but I do feel tipsy faster.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
