Has anyone been having sleeping problems since surgery?

Recommended Posts

In a few weeks, I'll officially be 2 months and have been having incredible trouble sleeping at a reasonable hour.

To be honest, the only thing that helps me fall asleep instantly is a Percocet, but I don't want to rely on them.

Am I the only one having this trouble? I'm so sleepy but can't sleep and had a good sleeping pattern before surgery.

Have you had your Iron levels checked? If you're only 2 months out this may not be an issue yet but low Iron can cause insomnia so might be worth checking. I have noticed that quite a few people have mentioned that they have trouble sleeping a few months after the op not exactly sure why but you are not alone in this.

i honestly had a little trouble in the first 6-8 weeks, i couldnt get my brain to shut off! i sleep better now over 2 months out but i think its maybe just something where your body is trying to adjust and hormone levels get wacky..i know mine did!

try the Simply sleep , either the generic or the Nyquil (ZZZquil) brand, or maybe some melatonin, i had never had sleeping issues before so i know your frustration!

disrupted sleep can make for a horrible day!

good luck!

I have had and still do (since surgery)have problems going to sleep and staying asleep. I am 6 weeks out. I will lay in bed sometimes for 2 hours before I go to sleep and sometimes I wake up and stay up for a couple of hours. Before surgery I would have no problems falling asleep. Sometimes my hubby would have to wake me up to go to bed.

I have been exercising in the late evenings to try and help this and if I push myself I use all my energy and I have a little easier time but that is the only thing I have tried that was worked.

I was having terrible insomnia after surgery. I started taking 2 Tylenol PM, and have been sleeping like a baby ever since.

Consider when you're taking your B12 as well. I had trouble sleeping shortly after surgery, and then switched to taking my B12 in the mornings. Since I started taking it earlier I haven't had any issues! Good luck

I actually sleep better through the night since surgery since I no longer have to get up to use the restroom 2-3 times. I can get a good 6-7 hours in before needing the bathroom. I was also going to mention like @@BloomingLotus to try taking your Vitamins earlier in the day. I have also read that late day exercising can cause insomnia in some people. Maybe try that earlier in the day too. Good Luck I hope you find some relief.

I actually sleep better than I did before surgery. I had insomnia for years. The only thing that helped was working out everyday. Even then I would wake up frequently during the night. Now I sleep soundly and rarely wake up in the middle of the night.

I was sleeved on 7/21--same problem. I've used the percocet to fall asleep as well. It's only been a week today since my sleeve. Praying it gets better. I'm NOT a pill popping person.

Yes! I take melatonin about 8 or 8:30 in the evenings so I can relax to go to sleep. I have some prescription sleep aids if I need them as well.

You are most likely in Ketosis and this can cause insomnia - google it :) Every time i do some kind of shake diet that drops me below 700-800cals and those Ketones kick in so does the insomnia :|

Same thing here as I responding at 2:30 am. I'm pretty sure it's the bariatric Vitamins for me. Pre surgery I wouldn't ever take b vitamins because I already had issues with hot flashes and sweating from my head. The bariatric vitamins the doc has me on have 8333% of recommended daily allowances (based on a 2000 cal diet) of B12. I think I'm just jazzed up on B vitamins and not used to having energy. Can't shut the mind down.

Hey guys. So now I have Acid Reflux. Everything has been fine since 7/20. A few cramps but nothing crazy. Went back to doc yesterday and she told me to try something over the counter. So today is day 2 let's see what happens. It makes me not want to drink anything. So of course I'm dehydrated????????

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
