Protein powders and kidney function

Recommended Posts

My dad who doesn't know anything about gastric bypass puts in his two cents from time to time. I'm pre op but telling my husband that I need to try some Isopure or GENEPRO powder. Dad was saying that Protein Powder can affect the kidneys. Is there a problem with using them? Like I said I'm pre op but practicing getting in my 64 ounces of Water in and my kidneys seem to work, I pee all the time. Don't want to mess them up with Protein. I drink Protein Shakes now and don't have a problem with them. I'd like to get some flavorless protein to put in my water. After surgery I want to hit the gym and build muscle, that means more protein than just 60-80 g per day.

I look at it this was everything in huge amounts is not healthy or side effects..unhealthy food...junk..sodas..coffee what ever put us in this position...health issues the meds we take for diabetes..blood pressure ..cholesterol all has side effects.....My nutritionist and doctor recommends the 60 to 80 g of Protein to help muscle mass and also with weightloss...I know someone who did the surgery and stop taking her protein and she wasnt losing a pound...

There is a reason why we are so enciuraged to drink tons of Water. I was warned early on if I didn't take it seriously because of my already existing issues with kidney infections it could happen. I am drinking tons of water. At least 80 oz a day to keep them flushed.

yes - I've read very high Protein consumption can be hard on kidneys, but I would think you should be OK with 60-80 grams a day (in fact, ASMBS says up to 100 grams), especially if you're drinking enough fluids.
