I have not had the surgury yet. Why do people say they get shoulder pain?

Its just small gas bubbles that were not removed at time of placement of your band. The gas is not harmfull and disapates in a few days to a week. But the bubbles cause nerve ending to signal the brain something is in there that should not be. we call this "referred pain" Thats is the bubble may be in your tummy area but it is referred to a shoulder.

Does that help ?

These are things a good surgical team will cover. Or at least they should.

You should go into this with a tremendous amount of knowledge and preparation. Starting to figure out what you have done after you are home is just crazy.

I would be happy to help you any time. k?

Matt

The shoulder pain is a result of gas pains, purchase an electric heating pad it helps.

So, I'm almost 2 months out from surgery now, and when I feel full, I get a pain in my left shoulder blade. My doc told me that it is the band "rubbing" against my diaphragm and that is where the pain is registered (in your shoulder blade). The idea of that creeps me out for some reason - maybe the r"ubbing against" part; don't know, but it could be a cause.

hi its been two months since i had da operation. the pain in the shoulders is due to the amount of gas in your body. i suffered a huge amount of pain with this. walking helps the gas to break and leave ur system. u'll be burping alot. aslo hot towls are brilliant!! good luck!!:)

I was banded yesterday and indeed there was the shoulder pain everyone talked about. I am glad the previous warnings and chats did not discourage me as I was really worried about the amount of pain it might cause. I did come out of the procedure with the "dreaded" shoulder pain, but I did walk as many of you recommended and I really liked the warm towel idea. I also have one of those neck and shoulder pads that can be warmed in the oven or microwave and that is so helpful. Today I have more problems with gas around the port area, so am icing that area frequently and still making sure to walk to get that gas out of there.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
