How Do You Arrive at Goal Weight?

Recommended Posts

Hi--I'm just beginning all this, and wondered, how does one decide on a goal weight? From a "chart" based on height, or as a mutually agreed upon number with the surgeon?

Or do you just pick a number yourself?

Just curious as I look at all the "tickers" and wonder what my goal would be. :D

Thanks for all responses!!

Carol

There's many different ways people come up with their goal weight. Sometimes it can be from a chart, sometimes it's just a number that the person and their doc feels would be right for them. Personally, I looked at a few charts, and thinking about my lowest weight and how I felt then, I came up with my goal number. Keep in mind that a goal weight can always change too. You might get down to a certain place and feel that's where you want to stay. Or you might get there and decide to lose 10 more. There's no right or wrong here. :D

I looked at the BMI chart and opted for the middle number in the healthy range. That put me losing 64 pounds to end up at 120. My doctor said I should try to lose 50 pounds though. I know I'd be happy with the 50 pound loss, so we'll see as I get there.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
