How long in hospital and off work?

Recommended Posts

This was my first major surgery and I was fine when it came to pain and mobility but boy was I exhausted! I recently tossed my full bottle of pain meds from almost 2 years ago. I didn't need them except maybe twice but I was tired until I started my B12 shots and my other supplements. I went back to work after 2 weeks but my boss kicked me out and I took another week off because I was still dehydrated and tired. My brain wouldn't function. I think it depends on the type of work and how active you are during the day.

Side note. I had 4 kids, ranging from kindergarten to senior in high school when I had my surgery so it was work plus family obligations. You have to include it all. :)

My surgery is on 9/29- RNY

My surgeon requires 2 nights minimum in hospital.

I am nurse with a very physically demanding job- 12 hour overnight shifts with little time to drink or even pee!

I am planning on taking 6 weeks off because I can-- I want to have time to focus on healing and getting diet on track before the busy everyday life starts back up! I have three weeks PTO/extended illness time, I can get STD after the 30 day waiting period.. I also have a lot of training I can do at ill pay at home to make up for the 4th week with out any pay.

My sister had sleeve surgery 4 months ago- she took off 4 weeks and wished she had a little longer- she was tired when she went back. She is a nurse on the floor as well!

I think it depends on your job, eh?!

My surgeon requires a longer hospital stay than most for all of his patients. I went in on a Wednesday and was discharged on a Saturday.

I took the full six weeks off, not only to heal but to adjust to a whole new digestive system, and way of life.

My pain was very minimal, and my surgery was complication free. But the accompanying exhaustion is real, and I was taking daily naps right up until I went back to work.

If I'd been forced to though, I probably could of gone back to work in a week, but it would have been draining. I would suggest you take as much time off as you have available. Good luck!

I wish I could 6 weeks off. Hell even 3 or 4 weeks. :-/ it'd be great to be eating puréed food when I go back to work but I just can't take the time off. That's not how my job works lol.

I stayed one night, went home late in the day my second day. I took 4 weeks off and I needed it all. But I'm a nurse so I'm always on my feet and moving so that makes a difference. The pain in my abs/core made it difficult to bend over and get things for 3 to 4 weeks.

The average hospital stay is 2 nights however you are required to drink a certain amount of liquid in an hour and if you can't they will not let you go home. I had mine 3 days ago and am still in the hospital because I have not been able to I just feel too full.

I was in the hospital 1 night and planned to take 4 weeks off work. There were complications, 2 more hospitalizations and a 2nd surgery. Ended up taking 6 weeks off work. I have a desk job, but the real problem was mental, not physical. Just fuzzy brain after the 2 surgeries/anesthesias. (I'm also down 31 pounds in 6 weeks!)

Best of luck to you!

I'm now planning on having the RNY. How long are you usually in the hospital and then home and off work? I was told that some people can go back to work within 2 weeks. I need to plan my vacation/sick leave. I'm just starting the process and haven't a doctor yet. Also I've had a C section and open hysterectomy so I'm used to pain. My sister in law wants to come and stay with me a few days to help out. Would that be necessary?

5 days in the hospital and two weeks off work for me.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
