How long in hospital and off work?

Recommended Posts

I'm now planning on having the RNY. How long are you usually in the hospital and then home and off work? I was told that some people can go back to work within 2 weeks. I need to plan my vacation/sick leave. I'm just starting the process and haven't a doctor yet. Also I've had a C section and open hysterectomy so I'm used to pain. My sister in law wants to come and stay with me a few days to help out. Would that be necessary?

I've had three C-sections, tubal, hernia, open hysterectomy, and then just had bypass three days ago. I do have to tell you, those are a good training ground.

In my opionion, this pain is nothing! Of course, I hurt and wanted pain meds, but the difference being that all the other incisions were below my belly button and use a whole different set of muscles. Remember how you couldn't even clear your throat, let alone cough afterwards? No problem.

I had surgery at 2:00 on Friday and my doctor was ready to send me home at 6:00 Saturday. There was a problem getting my scripts filled and I was not about to go home with only tyleno! I stayed one more night and went home by 11:00 on Sunday. One more night made all the difference. I was a teary mess on Saturday.

I pretty much slept the whole time in the hospital except for my little walks and answering the "how are you?" texts. I have my 15 year old daughter home today, which was nice--moral support. Yesterday it was good to have someone bring me things, but really today I'm doing pretty great. I can't believe it. I did take two naps. :) I'm 51, so it's not like I'm still in my "bounce-back years".

My doctor told me I could go back after a few days. I think that's too soon, because once you go back, life doesn't slow down, so I'd take at least a week and plan on feeling well rested.

Two weeks off work was plenty for me after surgery. Some people have said they've taken as many as six weeks.

I live alone, and had no trouble after getting home, although it might be nice to have someone around those first couple of days. The incision pain was a little rough at first, but it does get better everyday. It was mostly gone a week later, and then I was back up and around the second week post-op.

Thanks for the info. I think 2 weeks off work will probably be ok. I have a desk job. My sister in law was just worried because our other sister in law had the RNY surgery and while on pain meds she fell and broke her arm. So she had to recover from RNY and a broken arm. My sister in law doesn't want that to happen to me.

I stayed in the hospital for a day. I could have went back to work within two weeks, but I have chosen to stay out the entire six weeks. I have good and bad days. This is my first major surgery so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had my mom and sister home with me for the first week for some additional help which was necessary. They were life savers

My surgeon normally keeps patients in hospital for one day but made me stay for two because of my dodgy heart. He also recommends three weeks off work, which I took because I had plenty of sick leave owing and also masses of holiday time. I probably could have gone back to work after two weeks but it was good to have that extra week to get myself into a good routine.

I had a one night hospital stay. Things went very well. Within a week I resumed all of my normal activities.

Lots of Protein, Vitamins, and exercise. On my surgery date I was fat yet fit. No pain or complications was a blessing I attribute to my Dr's excellent pre op plan.

I was told by my surgeon at my last appointment yesterday to expect 2-3 days in hospital and minimum of 3 weeks off work.

RNY June 30th. I spent 24 hours in the hospital sleeping most of the time.

I had my Johnny at home to help but I had no problems at all.

I took 5 weeks off work because my job is ridiculously physical. I knew I couldn't go back too soon.

My only issue was the bone tired days. A morning shower would wipe me out for the day.

I'm having my RNY tomorrow and will be in the hospital for 1-2 days and off work for 3 weeks total. I can always go back early if I'm cleared by the doctor and, of course, feel better.

I had my RNY on 8/17 (Monday) and was out on Wednesday. My doctor offered to send me home on Tuesday but I was not ready to go.

I will be going back to work on 9/8, so 3 weeks off. I have a desk job and really want to take this time even if I'm physically able to go back sooner... It takes a lot to learn when you've got to take your pills, Joe and when to eat and drink, etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
