5 days post op trouble getting fluids down!

Recommended Posts

So my RNY was on the 20th of July and I'm having great difficulty getting my 64oz in! I'm maybe getting 24-30oz a day. I was given the nausea medicine, the Prilosec, and pain meds. It helped but the taste of Water, sugar free drinks, and at times broth makes me nauseous and I can barely take a sip. I've experienced gas pain with sugar free drinks and uncomfortable sensations with ice chips. I'm kind of regretting doing this at this poin. I'm trying to stay positive but what gives? I may need to go in to get fluids as I'm getting kinda lightheaded at times. I'm afraid to pass out or get a dot or pe! Ugh does anyone have any suggestions? My first post op appt is Thursday. And we are to stay on a clear liquid diet till then. Thanks guys!

I was in the same boat as you. I just kept experimenting with different liquids. I always had a glass of something with me or on table beside me. At that stage Water was the easiest thing for me. It will get better. Stick with it. You made the decision to head down this road after months of preparation, keep your head up and know you're not alone

Right after surgery, your body is trying to heal itself. Many people find it difficult in the beginning to get the required fluids down. In a few weeks it should get better. For me I found that flavored Water (Crystal Light) went down easier than Water. Later I found out that fine English teas tasted good. Experiment until you find something that works for you.

Thank you guys! I really needed some reassurance! I'm going to try the teas. I've found that a lot of the flavored stuff I can't really tolerate right now. It's so strange. But this is my new normal and I need to adjust. Thank you guys again! ☺️

I am 5 days out right now. I got about 30-40oz down per day. 64oz is goal but my doctor said work my way up to it. I just sip all day and write down every time I get 8oz down and see how much more I need.

My surgery was July 24th and it is getting easier to get down liquids. What hurts is the burps and hiccups. Each day I get down more fluids. chicken broth for me went down so much easier than the Water. But switching between crystal light and water. Try sugar free popsicles and Jello it helps as well.

I also had a hard time with liquids, like cold Water, try room temperature or even a little lukewarm. It worked for me. I'm now about 3 months out and can do cold water.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
