Road Trip - Is it safe?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for 8/3 and we had previously booked a vacation rental August 9th about 3 hours from our home. I wouldn't be driving and we would be stopping every hour to stretch. Once there I would be in full relaxation/recovery mode. Also there is a hospital about 20 minutes from the house. Does this seem feasable? Has anyone else had to travel that soon after surgery? I can stay home if needed... feedback would be great :)

I would talk to your surgeon's office. You would probably be ok, but might be a bit uncomfortable. I drove myself to my 1 week visit and it was 45 minutes away. It wasn't bad, but I was tired!

I took a 3 driving hour trip about a week after surgey. It was ok. I didn't drive of course, and I had to wear the belly wrap, and we had to stop a time or two more than usual, but there were not complications. Everyone is diifferent though, some heal quicker than others. I would ask your surgeon and then wait and see how you feel that day. If you decide to go, I would suggest taking the belly wrap and your pain meds just in case, and maybe a memory foam pillow.

We drove home 2 days after my surgery. 4 hour trip. We stopped every hour (once we got out of the city) so I could walk a bit and move around.

Of course I was tired but I slept a big part of the way.

I don't see any problem with your trip. Keep your water bottle close and sip on a Protein Drink.

I really don't think it will be a problem. I was back to work a week after surgery. Just listen to your body and don't be tempted to eat things you shouldn't.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
