Non-diabetic..hypoglycemia?

Recommended Posts

Did anybody else have trouble with low blood sugar after surgery? On my last day in the hospital mine was 55 and they gave me diluted apple juice and it went up to 90. I've been feeling very light headed, shaky, and getting pins and needles easily. I called my surgeons office but nobody ever called back. Should I buy a blood glucose monitor?

It is somewhat common for individuals that have gastric bypass bariatric surgery to experience hypoglycemia even if they were not diabetic prior to surgery. Most people can detect when an episode is coming on and take something to snap them out of it before their blood sugar gets too low.

This condition can be treated by consuming:

1/2 of fruit juice

1 cup of skim milk

1 tablespoon honey (put it under your tongue so it gets absorbed into your bloodstream faster)

2 tablespoons of raisens, or

glucose tablets

I am 10 months out and was having constant hypoglycemia that started month four. After seeing many Endocrinology doctors and numerous tests I finally figured out it is my body's form of dumping syndrome and when I eat anything over 7-8 grams of sugar it makes me drop like a rock exactly an hour and a half later. I have to be VERY careful. I also drop 15-20 minutes into any exercise so I have to drink juice or eat glucose tablets. Definitely buy a monitor and track everything!

I feel like I hit low blood sugar about 30 minutes after eating sweets. Feel like I am low on blood sugar. Which causes me to want to eat more to overcome it. I know I should just eat right the first time. But I do like something sweet once in a while.

Ive had high blood sugar and on metformin. June 2013 had gastric bypass and ever since my b/s has been low. My main doctor prescribed checking my blood 1 x day. I check it bout 4 or 5 times day because I feel light headed etc. Told my doctor this and she basically said notin. So I have to buy more strips at the store. Very costly. Always carry Protein bar with me where ever I go. My advice is carry a snack and b/s meter with you always. Enjoy your journey.

That feeling of low blood sugar may be a form of dumping syndrome, which @@pandababe94 mentioned. They often cite things like general awful feeling, sweating, light-headedness, etc., as some symptoms of dumping syndrome, which are similar to symptoms of hypoglycemia.

Maybe try SF candy, SF popsicles, or some other low-sugar form of sweet if you must have sweets. For example, Russell Stover SF Mints have no sugar, but beware that they are not low calorie.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
