Liver shrinking diet has solids?

Recommended Posts

I'm still about 5 months out from surgery but I had my nutrition evaluation already. I was surprised to find that my surgeon's pre-op diet has features a very small but solid dinner (4oz lean Protein, 1 cup green veggies)

My research has never seen anything like this. Is this unusual?

My VSG is September 1, 2015. My pre-op diet is all solids, there is NO liquid only or anything like that. It is a low calorie, low fat, low carb diet. I just don't eat or drink anything after midnight before surgery. I was wary due to seeing ALL of the posts about everyone else's diets, but I trust my surgeon and NUT. They are a center of excellence and he is a very well known, well rated doc with a ton of surgeries under his belt. I'm also interested in any others out there who had similar diets. Good luck with everything!!

Congrats on starting your journey @! No this is not unusual at all, I'm currently on my on my 2 week pre-op (liver shrinking) diet and it's a 1000 calorie diet with all food except on the day before surgery I'll have all liquids. Keep in mind that the pre-op diet can be done multiple ways and it varies depending on the hospital, surgeon, bariatric program and patient. Research is great but don't lock into it.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
