Bama, you should definitely consider getting some real some Protein Shakes. The Carnation stuff isn't going to cut it. I've bought the ABB and the GNC brand ready-to drink shakes (50 grams in a 15 oz can). They come in a bunch of flavors and are pretty tasty. I drink mine over the course of a few hours between meals.

I agree with Dawn. Try GNC since you can go the store and buy it. I like the whey Protein. Make a shake with that. My favorite, though, is Unjury. That's on-line at unjury.com, but takes a few days to receive it. Carnation definitely isn't going to cut it to get the 60 grams in. I still have an unjury shake for breakfast on work mornings because I can drink it on my way in and knock out 40 grams very quickly. I don't eat as much at work as at home, so it helps to get that done first thing. My usual food during work is cottage cheese or Tomato Soup, so definitely need the protein the shake. I'm 5 weeks post op and -26 lbs.

Hi and congrats!

What really really worked for me was Protein nectar. Mostly because it mixes up like crystal light. My first week post op, I would make four servings in a picture and mix in a little of crystal light and I kept drinking it down.... I believe it's 27 grams per 8 oz servings (1 scoop).

OK chill this is a no brainer.

More than likely your whole life you never got 40 - 60 grams of raw protien.

You will be fine. Relax that is the key to this be still. Figure it out then act.

Potato Soup is not much on protien my dear its cream and salt and fat. ( and so good) but its food choices like that , that undermine your banding program.

Ice cream is another OMG! So good but again it takes up valuable real estate. You have less than 8 oz to put food into. Real food. Protien, Water, maybe some dry toast, crackers, dry tuna, etc.

OK? Get the Idea?

you can buy whey Protein Powder at the health food store and mix it into anything else you drink or sip (carnation instant breakfast, Soup, pudding), it has a creamy taste and is a really high quality Protein and easily digested.

oops my bad. The point I was making is that protien is protien. Good tasting with a smooth consistency costs more than the grittier ones but they are all protien. Get in what you need first thing. Then eat or drink as your program has laid out for you.

Where do you buy it? I really hate the Protein shakes.....absolutely too heavy tasting.....but I love crystal light!

Actually, Protein is not protein...there are significant differences between the effect on the body of collagenic Protein and whey protein. My nutritionists strongly advocate looking for 100% whey isolate protein, like you find in unjury powder or Isopure powder/pre-mixed drinks.

The body building stuff quite often is a mix of different protein sources along with other stuff that, honestly, who knows what it does to/for you.

And you have to read the label...I bought some 'bullet' shots that were labelled as New Whey liquid Protein, but the ingredients on the label were:

"Pure deionized Water, Actinase (patent pending blend of enzymatically hydrolyzed collagenic protein isolate, whey protein isolate and caseine protein isolate), malic acid, Myovol? Complex (proprietary blend of leucine, valine and isoleucine), all natural flavors, acesulfame-potassium, sucralose, blue 1 and red 40."

This means that most of the protein was collagenic, not whey isolate.

I'm not a nutritionist (or a body builder), I'm just passing along what my nutritionists have told me. You get much more benefit from whey isolate protein than collagenic.

For my protein, I have one bottle of premixed Isopure, which comes in multiple flavors and has 40g of whey isolate protein, then I have 8 oz. of soy milk with Unjury or Isopure powder.< /p>

so should i be alarmed if the Protein powder i am buying says its for weight GAIN? like i said, i'm just trying to verify if its true.

does it make a difference which protein powder you buy that will make you gain weight??? is that the main purpose for them? lets dismiss whey, soy etc for a minute here. are there different TYPES of powder for weight gain, body builders and people that just want to get some protein in, like us??? (that was hard to get out!!! lol)

Well...

My understanding is that many of the products (like at GNC) that advertise they're for weight gain have lots of stuff other than Protein in them...like carbs, etc. I wouldn't use those. But some pure Protein products are sold for weight gain, since they help to add muscle.

The only real way I can think of to tell is to look at the nutrition label...how many calories/scoop or serving? Should be very little if it is just protein. What kind of ingredients are listed?

For instance...Unjury powder is 90 calories per scoop, with 0 grams of fat, 3g total carbs, 20g of protein.

Pro Gainer weigh gain supplement protein powder has 645 calories/serving, 7g of fat, 110g of carbs...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
