New bicycle thread!!

Recommended Posts

YAY! A thread on biking!

I splurged and just bought a Specialized Ruby Comp (full carbon Fiber road bike) and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I really hadn't planned to spend that much on a bike, but I figured I wanted one that would last 5+ years, and just enjoyed the fit (and look!) of this one. Oh well, you only live once, right? :)

I had a Polar bike computer installed yesterday but unfortunately even though I spent hours trying to get the dang thing to work, I'll likely have to take it back in today (got everything other than the heart rate monitor to work, but that's one of the reasons I bought the thing!).

Went a touch over 10 miles last night averaging well over 12mph - I'm hoping to go again tonight after my Personal Trainer kicks my butt and I get the bike computer fixed. :)

I had started trying to run a few weeks ago (doing intervals of running with walking, working up to more run than walk!) - but I enjoy the biking SO much more!!! :)

Thanks Deanna! My weight loss has been my #1 priority (since I got to 100 lbs less than 7 months after banding!). I love it that people simply don't even recognize me now - either physically, or because I want to do. Last Thanksgiving at 282lbs I wouldn't have dreamed of hopping on a bike and doing 10 miles and LOVING it!

:)

Oh yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Less than three months ago when I was banded, I didn't dream of getting on a bicycle. I thought walking was going to be my exercise of choice and it was until one day I was overcome by boredom and KNEW that if I continued to walk every day I would end up quitting soon! I want to run too eventually, but for now, I am quite happy with the biking. I don't want to run for my cardio routine though, I just want to be able to go running if I so choose. So happy for you!!

Also, I am so impressed with your loss, I am at 58 pounds lost now so I KNOW I can be 100 pounds down by Christmas if I really keep my mind focused!!!! My son told me yesterday, he is 19 and only notices himself, that I was wasting away. Then he said, "you are really looking good". That makes it all the more worth it when your family makes comments!!!

Okay I have been really enjoying riding my bike. Nice leisurely ride to work. DH and I went to the metropark today and for the first time I absolutely *loved* riding. We went 14 miles and it was pretty hilly. I had a blast racing down the hills. I must go again tomorrow lol.

DH is reading this and wants me to mention that he did the whole 14 miles on his rollerblades. He was a real rockstar out there. I was pretty proud of him.

Thanks Deanna for pointing me to the challenge! It'll help keep me focused.

Babygrl - way to rock it! 14 miles, with hubby on rollerblades? Both of you are superstars in my book! :)

That is so cool...tell hubby.........WAY TO GO!!!! I used to roller blade 4 hours a night almost every night!!!!! That was about 8 years ago, I was still heavy probably about like I am now...maybe I should start doing that again. I really loved doing that, in fact, hubby and I would take our big broom and sweep the entire park trail so we had a clean smooth surface to blade on. LOL....nice job on the 14 miles....I think it gets funner the farther you go too!!! When you get done, your ass might hurt but your body feels awesome!!!!

p.s. I had to ride by myself tonight. DH hurt his back pushing the boat around on the 4th so I went by myself. Not nearly as fun and seemed like a lot more work too!!! I love the motivation and encouragement that he gives me along the way!!

I like to rollerblade, but 14 miles on skates is just crazy to me lol. I can do maybe 3. Surprisingly my ass is not hurting, though it was sore last night when I got home. The rest of my body is hurting a bit from my Tour de France role playing though. Next time I need to be a little more careful and realize that Lance Armstrong has to stretch his muscles too.

It is much more fun to go with a friend.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
