Help! Just had surgery...

Recommended Posts

I had to spend 2 nights in the hospital - my surgeon makes all his sleeve and gastric bypass patients spend 2 nights.

I had 2 shots of morphine the first day. The 2nd day I had a major headache and they gave me liquid Vicodan. I walked, walked, walked and I didn't take any other pain meds.

I was walking 10-15 minutes out of every hour and got rid of the gas pretty quickly that way.

I work from home and I still took off a full week and worked about 5 hours a day the 2nd week. I was totally exhausted.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

I only felt seriously nauseous the second day and slight waves here and there over day 3 and 4. My sisters driving me home from the hospital did not help. I only took my at home pain meds one time when it got unbearable and I got a pounding headache. Good luck.

This has been helpful. I was sleeves on 7/21/15 also. I am pretty sore and wondering when it will go away. One thing I'm worried about is having a feeling to cough. When I start coughing it last awhile and I have been coughing up blood tinged mucus. It's not a lot of blood by any means. I think it just from the tube that was in my throat. I'm worried I could pop a stitch. Anyone else have that issue? Also I really haven't drank or eaten anything. Advice please.

You're not alone. Coughing and attempting to vomit are not enjoyable experiences. Gas pains still exist.

I can't seem to keep Water down. Same thing with Protein drinks. I don't enjoy this pain!

I haven't even tried anything but a few sips of Water until just now. I am sipping on some chicken broth and it is tasting amazing right now. I haven't really had the nausea , so I feel for you on that. I couldn't imagine the pain of vomiting like this. The cough is bad enough. I don't know if they told you this but hold a pillow tight to your stomach when coughing or vomiting.

Coughing and deep breathing are actually good for you despite the pain. Brace your tummy and cough-good for your lungs.

I was sleeved on 7/21. The first night was rough with gas pain and I had to cough so it made me vomit the Water I had sipped and it had very minimal blood in it. My surgeon ordered two doses of decadron which are steroids to help the swelling of my stomach to go down and reglan for nausea. He discharged me yesterday. I have some gas pain and no nausea. I only took one ounce of Protein Drink. I've been sipping water all day and had a few bites of Jello. My stomach is growling really bad right now so I will attempt to drink broth. I'm not going to lie yesterday morning I was going through the wth did I just do stage but today I feel better and glad I had the surgery. Oh and I have hiccups a lot.

I think everybody has a day where they wonder if they made a mistake in having WLS. And that day is 2 or 3 days post-op. You actually feel pretty good when you leave the hospital, but you've still got some of the IV meds in you, leftovers of anesthesia, and the swelling hasn't really peaked yet. Don't be discouraged because if you follow post-op directions you will be over it pretty quick. I'm day 4 and I just cleaned the house!

As I mentioned previously my surgery date was the 21st, now 2 days post-op. I'm at home and relaxing in the recliner. I take my meds every 4 hours and walk then, but ugh!!! Abdominal pain plus gas is pure evil. The iv drip at the hospital was misleading!

I'm 2 days post op and totally agree the gas pain and stomach growling is very evil.. Lol I think I over did it when I ate a whole sugar free Popsicle now I'm feeling cramps that come and go like a contraction. Lol take your meds and walk as often as u can.

Yes, cramps like a contraction...good way to describe it. I started solids today and I can feel everything as it goes down and moves through my new stomach.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
